BISEs all set to hold matric exams

Lahore, April 02, 2008: Eight education boards in Punjab are trying to make foolproof arrangements for matriculation examinations keeping in mind the next government to be headed by Shahbaz Sharif.

The annual secondary school certificate (matriculation) examination would commence from April 8 across the province and the new government would be in place the next day. A caretaker set up would be at the helm of affairs during matriculation examinations but Shahbaz Sharif would call the shots.

According to sources, Education Department officials and high ups of the Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs) are nervous because the commencement of examinations and formation of a new government would coincide. They fear that any untoward incident could cost them their job when the new chief minister takes over. The sources said the department was focused on the forthcoming examinations being held at a crucial time.

An official seeking anonymity said that Shahbaz Sharif was believed to be a tough and strict administrator. The examination system was also reformed during Shahbaz's tenure as the chief minister, he added. He said that Shahbaz established a special monitoring cell to supervise matriculation and intermediate examinations as CM.

The cell was still active and efforts were being made to improve its working, he added.

The department estimated that around 1 million students across the province would appear in the SSC examinations, the official said. He said the department was making an all-out effort to hold examinations in a free and fair manner and provide good facilities to candidates at examination centres.

He said ban on transfer/postings in the Education Department was likely to be lifted in May/June during annual summer holidays. He said representatives of law enforcement agencies and heads of Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Educations were scheduled to meet on April 4 to chalk out a security plan for the examinations.

He said the department had formed special squads to liaise with law enforcement agencies and the monitoring cell.

According to the sources, the Education Department was working on a presentation on its programmes, projects and policies.

The presentation would cover performance and functioning of various wings of the department and policies especially those introduced by the PML government, the sources added. The News
