Balochistan University pro VC shot dead

QUETTA, April 23, 2008: Unidentified men shot dead the acting pro vice-chancellor of Balochistan University outside his Sariab Toad house on Tuesday, police said.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a banned Baloch separatist group, claimed responsibility for the killing.

Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Akbar said that Professor Dr Safdar Kiyani was taking a routine walk outside his house at about 7pm when unidentified men riding a motorcycle fired three shots at him, injuring his head and back. He died on the spot.

Kiyani, a Botany professor from Rahim Yar Khan, had been the university's dean of students' affairs and was expected to be appointed the new vice chancellor. A spokesman for the BLA, which has been engaged in the targeted killing of Punjabi-speaking professionals, telephoned newspaper offices and claimed responsibility for the professor's killing. Murder of Balochistan varsity VC condemned

Lahore: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association has condemned the murder of Balochistan University Vice-Chancellor Prof Safdar Kiyani.

PUASA President Dr Mumtaz Salik and Secretary-General Prof Dr Mehr Saeed Akhtar said the association would hold a symbolic funeral for Prof Kiyani at PU administration block masjid at 1:15pm on Wednesday (today).

They have appealed to the university teachers to participate in the funeral prayers.

They said Prof Kiyani was appointed vice-chancellor of the Balochistan University just two days ago after the removal of a "matriculate VC". The PU would observe three-day mourning, they said. Dawn
