KU VC for Rangers' stay, teachers disagree | Dow admissions
Karachi, April 15, 2008: The Rangers shall continue to
guard the University of Karachi campus, said a handout Monday.
"It was
unanimously agreed that the presence of the rangers is a great help in
maintaining law and order on campus and this should continue," said a press
release issued by the KU Public Relations Department.
It was decided at a
high-level meeting on law and order on campus with the vice chancellor. However,
the teachers have claimed that no such decision was made at the meeting and the
Rangers shall remain a call away instead.
Meanwhile, the Karachi
University Teachers' Society (KUTS) General Secretary, Dr Abid Hasnain, who also
attended the meeting, said on Monday, "No, we have not agreed to the
residence of Rangers on campus. We agreed, conditionally, that the rangers can
be called in a time of need, to maintain law and order on campus. The rangers
can not live on campus. This was not decided in the meeting. We appreciate the
Sindh government's decision to withdraw rangers from all education
institutions."
The meeting was chaired by VC Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim
Raza Siddiqui and was attended by the KU KUTS general secretary, Faculty of Arts
Dean Prof. Dr M. Shamsuddin, Faculty of Science Dean Prof. Dr Darakhshan,
Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr Waseem, Faculty of Management Science Dean
Prof. Dr M. Abuzar Wajidi, Faculty Islamic Learning Dean Dr Noori, Professor Dr
Fahimuddin, Advisor Academic to VC Prof. Dr Aqeel Ahmed, Advisor Campus Security
Affairs Dr Khalid Iraqi and Students' Advisor Dr Nusrat Idrees.
According
to a press release, the meeting discussed the condition of law and order on
campus. The role of senior teachers in maintaining peace during the last few
days was highly applauded by the VC. It was however felt by the participants
that it would not be possible for the teachers, alone, to look after security
affairs on campus. The meeting also acknowledged that during the last 20 years,
rangers with proper training have played a commendable role in maintaining a
peaceful atmosphere on campus.
The press release further acknowledged
that the deployment of rangers and law enforcement agencies were essential for
maintaining an atmosphere of peace and fraternity.
"We agreed with the
Sindh government's announcement to withdraw rangers from all educational
institutions. Rangers can be called at a time of need but we are against their
permanent residence in educational institution including KU." said Dr Abid
Hasnain. Daily Times
