Karachi: Dr Farooq Sattar, minister for local government, on Saturday handed over keys of 20 buses to Karachi and NED University besides a donation of Rs 4 million from the KMC for repairing of the buses.

He visited the University of Karachi and NED University of Engineering and Technology along with Provincial Minister for Education Qazi Khalid Ali, who is also the prochancellor of public universities in the province, and Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Khalid Bin Walid. They were received by Vice Chancellor KU, Dr Zafar H Zaidi and Vice Chancellor NED University, Abdul Kalam at the universities along with senior faculty members.

The vice chancellor urged the visitors to keep their official profile dominating over other activities in the larger interest of students and academic atmosphere in the campus. One of the vice chancellors said he was happy to receive the senior minister and the pro-chancellor in the official capacity, but would request them to ask supporters to keep political profile at low level since political activities were restricted within the university premises.

After the formal handing over of order pertaining to repairs and handing over of defunct KTC's buses to Dr Zafar Zaidi, Dr Farooq Sattar, Qazi Khalid and Khalid Bin Walid visited the KU Arts Lobby, Dr Farooq delivered a brief speech, full of couplets, before a gathering of students. KU finance dept irks vendors, staff
Karachi: The finance department of the Karachi University has become a troublesome for vendors and cooperative teaching staff of the varsity, as the department issues payments late to cooperative teachers and vendors.

Vendors, belonging to different large and small companies, are usually forced to give bribery at the KU finance department for clearance of their bills, a source in the KU administration said on Saturday.

"The finance department consists of the accounts, budget and audit departments, where nearly 70-member staff performs their duties under S M Khalid, Director Finance (DF). The director finance is a retired person, who is now passing honeymoon period, as he is not concerned with the departmental affairs. On the other hand, Chief Accountant Muhammad Iqbal heads the account section. The staffs of the finance department are lazy as they slack off all the time in the office with nonsense, said a vendor, providing services to KU since long time, on a condition of anonymity.

He said, "The accounts mafia never drops the idea of their interest through inducements when they issue cheques to vendors, otherwise those vendors who do not show any indication of corruption are treated as miserably among accounts, budget, audit and purchase departments for the clearance of the payments.

Due to the social compulsion, the vendors are forced to put up with apathetic behaviour of the concerned staff. The inefficient staffs of the department take at least four/five months to release payments of any vendor. Sometimes, payments take even one year to be released from the finance department.

The negligence by the high-ups of the finance department over the intentional impediments towards release of payments to vendors shows their self-interest.

The higher authorities of the Karachi University, including the KU Vice Chancellor and Registrar, find themselves powerless before the accounts mafia.

It is pertinent to mention here that around 50 to 55 vendors are registered only with the KU Purchase Office, while more than 100 vendors are providing services to various departments of the university.

According to complaints of the varsity cooperative teachers, the KU account mafia has become habitual to aggravate the problems of the irregular teaching staff of the university by issuing them salaries four/five months late without any solid reason.

A cooperative teacher, declined to be named, said that the teachers received salaries after schedule.

While the finance department do not give a hoot what the teachers will do with out money. "Thank goodness, the salaries are issued to the teachers, otherwise no one can make the mafia realize about the problems of the irregular teaching staff.

The teachers are tense due to the inadequate and lethargic performance of the accounts mafia," he observed. The Nation
