New syllabus for Madaaris this year: Ahsan Iqbal
Islamabad, April 19, 2008: Religious schools will get a new curriculum this year while the National Syllabus Council (NSC) would also be constituted.

Federal Minister for Education Ahsan Iqbal stated this while talking in the National Assembly on Friday. The education minister said under the Madaaris Reforms Programme, a new syllabus for Madaaris would be formalised after taking the Madaaris into confidence.

He said the previous government used the syllabus of the Madaaris for its own political objectives and to please foreign countries, which sparked opposition in the Madaaris of the country. The minister said the draft of the new education system was being reviewed and would be prepared in consultation with the provinces.

The education minister underlined that the NSC would also be constituted to bring the syllabus at par with the international level. He said besides educational experts, members of parliament would also be included in the NSC.

Ahsan Iqbal said the same syllabus was being implemented in the government sector while the elimination of education system of A and O level by 2010 was also being considered. The minister said it was sad that our education system had separate systems of Urdu, English, A Level, O Level and Madaaris. He said the new government was determined to implement the same education system in the country.

The minister said Urdu was our national language and we would not ignore it for the sake of English speakers. He said in this regard, a National Conference would be arranged in the coming month.
