PAF Academy, Risalpur Convocation
Peshawar, April 16, 2008: The Convocation Ceremony of No 120 General Duty (Pilot) Course was
held at College of Flying Training, Pakistan Air Force Academy, Risalpur on
Tuesday. Owais Ahmed Ghani, Chancellor University of Peshawar, Governor NWFP
awarded the degrees in the discipline of Bachelor of Science to the graduating
Officers. Pilot Officer M Waqas Rasheed received the Trophy for Overall Best
performance in Academics. Pilot Officer M Waqas Rasheed won the trophy for Best
performance in Aero-Sciences subjects. Pilot Officer Naveed Ahmad Abbasi
received the trophy for securing first position in Humanities Subjects.
In his
address to the graduating Officers, the Governor said, "The 21st Century will be
characterized by the fully developed, knowledge-based society. Military
education is always imbued with a distinctive colour". He said it is
predominantly geared to pragmatic application of the pilots' learning in a
preset direction. He said since the credibility of country's armed forces has a
direct bearing on the formulation of national security strategy, consequently,
there is an increasing need for higher education in the armed forces". "It holds
good for the practical as well as broad based academic knowledge. The tremendous
advancement in the field of aviation further emphasize on the need to acquiring
knowledge by the young aviators, which in turn would enable them to handle the
latest technology with more confidence." Earlier, on his arrival, at PAF Academy

Matriculation exams cancelled in Kurram Agency
Parachinar: Hundreds of candidates Tuesday staged a rally against postponement
of matriculation examination in Kurram Agency.
As the annual examination
of matriculation was scheduled to commence on Tuesday, hundreds of candidates
including girl students in the agency came to the respective examination centres
to attempt the first paper. However, after long wait the candidates were
informed that examination material had not reached and subsequently declared
that it was cancelled.
All candidates from various examination centres
gathered outside the political agent's office in Parachinar where they staged a
demonstration and demanded of the authorities concerned to conduct the
examination.
Candidates told reporters that they had contacted Kohat
Board of Education where the concerned high-ups informed them that papers and
other examination material had been sent on time, but the political
administration delayed it due to unknown reasons. The candidates appealed to the
prime minister, federal education minister and NWFP governor to order the
authorities conduct the examination and save their precious
time.
Meanwhile, more than 100 candidates were deprived of entry test for
admission to reputed educational institutions on government scholarship as the
helicopter sent to bring them to Peshawar lifted irrelevant people
Monday.
Earlier, the Kurram Agency political agent and Kohat regional
coordination officer had promised to make arrangements for transportation of the
candidates to Peshawar to take the ETEA test but the chopper airlifted other
people and left behind more than 100 candidates. The parents of the candidates
have protested the indifference of the official concerned and demanded action
against the responsible people.
New VC has ambitious plans for Malakand varsity
Peshawar: The newly appointed vice-chancellor of Malakand University Prof Dr
Rasul Jan, who would soon take charge of his new office, has said he would focus
on producing globally marketable graduates from the university.
He said after assuming the charge, he would look into the existing
strength of the institute and then make planning for its uplift. He said he
would make special focus on building modern infrastructure and hiring qualified
human resource, as without these two production of internationally marketable
graduates was not possible. "Though I have never been to the Malakand University
before, I fear it has not been groomed like a world class seat of learning," he
said.
Before his appointment as VC, Dr Rasul Jan was serving as director
Institute of Chemical Studies University of Peshawar. Hailing from Ningolai
village of Kabal subdivision of Swat district, Dr Rasul Jan did his master's
from the department of Chemistry, University of Peshawar, in the year 1976 and
MPhil from the same department in 1979.
The academician left for Ireland
in 1980 for his PhD and completed doctorate within the shortest two-year span.
He got his PhD in 1982 and returned to Pakistan. As he was not having a post, he
went back to Ireland on European Economic Committee-sponsored post-doctorate
fellowship at University College Dublin, which he completed in three years.
It was in 1985 when Rasul Jan joined the University of Peshawar as
assistant professor at the department of Chemistry. In 1999, he was transferred
to the department of Environmental Sciences and was posted as head of the
same.
In year 2001, Rasul Jan was retransferred to his parent department
- chemistry. In 2003, the professor went to US for one-year Fulbright fellowship
at New Mexico University. In 2005, he was made a visiting scientist of the
Institute of Bio-Designing, Zonal State University, USA. He was in the same
university, when he was posted as chairman of the department of chemistry in
June 2005.
Soon after his appointment as chairman, Dr Rasul Jan converted
the chemistry department into the Institute of Chemical Sciences and became its
first director. Dr Rasul Jan has 94 publications to his credit, mostly published
in international journals and his national standing as chemist is 8th. It was
he, who introduced the culture of research in the department of chemistry. He
produced eight PhD degree holders and 15 of MPhils. Even currently he is
supervising the PhDs of seven HEC-sponsored research scholars.
It merits
a mention here that like Malakand University, the University of Peshawar has
been functioning without a full time vice-chancellor for the past eight months.
With the appointment of Dr Rasul Jan, the matter of Malakand University has been
settled down, but the case of appointment of full-time VC for the University of
Peshawar has been kept pending.
It was expected that appointment of VCs
for both the universities would be made through one notification, but the same
was not done. Some senior professors of the university opined that interference
was made into the appointment of VC UoP at the very high level, which resulted
in the undue delay.
It has been learnt that the acting vice-chancellor
of the university Prof Dr Javed Khan, who was earlier ousted from the race for
the fulltime vice-chancellorship, has made re-entry in the run. Prof Dr Azmat
Hayat, who was earlier considered as favourite candidate for the office, has now
been dropped and Dr Javed might be notified as fulltime VC, sources said. The News
