Plagiarism accusation against PU Psychology Dept chairwoman
Not guilty, says PU Applied Psychology Dept head
Lahore, April 8, 2008: Punjab
University (PU) Applied Psychology Department Chairwoman Prof Dr Yasmeen Farooqi
said that she was not a plagiarist and was willing to appear before inquiry
members to prove it.
She was responding to an accusation by former PU
Applied Psychology chairman Dr Mian Aftab, who said that an article Dr Farooqi
had published in a journal had been copied from a student's thesis. He said that
he had the documents to prove his claim. Dr Aftab was sacked as chair of the
department after charges of plagiarism were proved against him.
A couple
of days ago, the PU VC asked senior PU professors to probe the charge against Dr
Farooqi. The VC was asked by the chancellor to investigate after Dr Aftab wrote
to him accusing Dr Farooqi of plagiarism.
Dr Aftab said that the PU
Syndicate should hold an inquiry in the matter. He accused PU vice chancellor Dr
Mujahid Kamran of bias towards Dr Farooqi in the case. He asked the chancellor,
Governor Khalid Maqbool, to look into the matter.
Dr Aftab said he had told the governor that Dr Farooqi had
supervised a thesis titled, Pre-post Evaluation of Depression and Anxiety in
Patients Undergoing Mastectomy and Hysterectomy. He said that Alia Shah, a
student of MSc in Psychology, submitted the thesis in 1998.
He said Dr
Farooqi published parts of the thesis in the Journal of Pakistan Psychiatric
Society under the title, Depression and Anxiety in Patients Undergoing
Hysterectomy, but did not acknowledge Alia Shah's contribution. Dr Aftab said
that he had complained to the Higher Education Commission in this regard, but it
did not probe the matter.
Dr Farooqi claims copyrights: Dr Farooqi said that she was willing to appear before any inquiry team. She said
that she had the copyrights of Alia Shah's research papers in which she was
authorised to use the papers with her name. She said Dr Aftab, in connivance
with some other members of her department were propagating against her. She also
accused Dr Aftab of stealing Shah's thesis from the department's library. She
said that she had been working on the topic for many years. She said that Alia
Shah had migrated to the US after receiving her postgraduate degree from the PU
and was no longer linked with the study of Psychology.
PU Spokesman Dr
Mujahid Mansoori said that the VC had instructed senior professors to look into
the matter on instructions from the chancellor.
