Alleged fraud in Zakat scholarships. UET seeks legal advice from Punjab govt
Lahore: An alleged financial embezzlement in connection with disbursement of Zakat scholarships at the University of
Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore has become enigma for the varsity
administration, which has sought legal advice from the government in this
regard. It has been learnt that a probe by University of Engineering
& Technology had confirmed some irregularities in disbursement of
scholarships while the provincial Zakat & Ushr Department has termed the
allegations unfounded and baseless following which the university syndicate
decided to seek legal advice from the government as to whether findings of the
Zakat department might be taken as final decision. According to sources,
the issue regarding alleged embezzlement at the University of Engineering &
Technology Department of Mathematics was brought to the notice of university
syndicate on January 24, 2009 in which it decided to have an advice from the
Punjab government. They added that on March 31, 09, the University of
Engineering & Technology Registrar requested the Secretary Punjab Higher
Education Department to forward the case to the Secretary Law &
Parliamentary Affairs for legal advice. They said District Zakat Officer
had issued two cheques amounting to Rs 430,008 and Rs 31,464 in the name of
Chairman Mathematics Department, University of Engineering & Technology and
this was meant for distribution among needy and deserving students of the
department under MORA Scholarship. They further said however, last year
on a complaint of some students to Administrator Zakat Punjab with a copy to
University of Engineering & Technology Vice Chancellor regarding
disbursement, the VC Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Akram Khan directed Chairman Physics
Department, Prof Dr Khaleeq ur Rehman to carry out a probe into the complaint.
The sources further said the chairman while submitting the report stated
that there had been some irregularities in disbursement of the scholarships to
students and recommended to proceed for action in accordance with
law. They added following the probe, the VC desired to put the case
before the syndicate for necessary action, adding however in the meantime
Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department intimated the Mathematics
Department Chairman Prof Dr Ozair Ahmad that as per findings of the Inquiry
Officer allegations levelled against him were proved unfounded and
baseless. When contacted, University of Engineering & Technology vice
chancellor Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Akram Khan confirmed that the varsity had
sought advice from the Punjab Law Department saying the decision in this regard
was taken by the syndicate.
Urdu, Hindi, Hindustani Lecture at PU
Lahore: The Punjab University Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) organised a special lecture on "Urdu,
Hindi, Hindustani" at New Campus on Tuesday. PU Department of Literary History
of the Muslims of the Indo-Pak Subcontinent and former Dean Faculty of Oriental
Learning Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya delivered the lecture. He highlighted
in detail the history of Hindi language, the inclusion of Arabic, Persian and
Iranian words in the Hindi language after the Muslims' arrival in the
subcontinent, creation of Urdu language, promotion of Urdu and Hindi languages
and separation of Hindi and Urdu languages as a result of 1857 Independence War. The News

Academicians vie for addl secretary post
Lahore: The post of additional secretary academic higher education has
become hot favourite for some educationists due to reasons best known to them
and many academics are vying to grab the post. After Professor Ms Farukh
Zahra Gillani was transferred from the said post just after four months, a
former additional secretary academic succeeded to get himself posted at the same
slot. He had worked on the same position two times before but was yet eager
to be appointed due to unknown reasons. Ms Farukh Zahra Gillani working as
additional secretary academic higher education was posted some four months back
but on March 24, 2009 Professor Maqsud Mumtaz got his orders issued by the
S&GAD Punjab for his posting on the same post. On April 04, 2009 the very
next month, the orders were cancelled by the same authority and Farukh Zahra was
posted once again on the said post. It is also worth mentioning here that Farukh
Zahra Gillani is the only female professor posted at the slot among the 20 male
professors posted since 1976. The post deals in public sector and private
universities, intermediate boards, libraries of Punjab, students' and colleges'

UHS announced BSc result
Lahore: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has declared the result of the Second Professional BSc
(4-year) Annual Examination held in February 2009. According to a press
statement, total 69 candidates had appeared in the exam and 53 were declared
passed with pass percentage of 76.81. Maryam Bibi of the Armed Forces
Postgraduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI), Rawalpindi, secured the first position
whereas Shagufta Rehman and Rabia Hanif of Shalamar Hospital, Lahore, got second
and third positions respectively. The roll numbers of the successful candidates
are: College of Nursing AFPGMI, Rawalpindi; 601 to 615, 617 to 627, 629, College
of Nursing Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore; 651, 652, 655 to 657, 659, 661,
664, 665, 667, 668 and Shalamar Hospital, Lahore; 701 to 707, 710, 712, 713,

Training of college teachers in Punjab
Lahore: Secretary Higher Education Punjab Azhar
Hussain Shamim has said that besides provision of basic facilities for enhancing
the standard of higher educational institutions, in-service training programme
of college teachers is also being introduced. He expressed these views while
addressing the 53rd convocation of Government Islamia College for Women, Cooper
