Alleged fraud in Zakat scholarships. UET seeks legal advice from Punjab govt
Lahore: An alleged financial embezzlement in connection with disbursement of Zakat scholarships at the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore has become enigma for the varsity administration, which has sought legal advice from the government in this regard.

It has been learnt that a probe by University of Engineering & Technology had confirmed some irregularities in disbursement of scholarships while the provincial Zakat & Ushr Department has termed the allegations unfounded and baseless following which the university syndicate decided to seek legal advice from the government as to whether findings of the Zakat department might be taken as final decision.

According to sources, the issue regarding alleged embezzlement at the University of Engineering & Technology Department of Mathematics was brought to the notice of university syndicate on January 24, 2009 in which it decided to have an advice from the Punjab government.

They added that on March 31, 09, the University of Engineering & Technology Registrar requested the Secretary Punjab Higher Education Department to forward the case to the Secretary Law & Parliamentary Affairs for legal advice.

They said District Zakat Officer had issued two cheques amounting to Rs 430,008 and Rs 31,464 in the name of Chairman Mathematics Department, University of Engineering & Technology and this was meant for distribution among needy and deserving students of the department under MORA Scholarship.

They further said however, last year on a complaint of some students to Administrator Zakat Punjab with a copy to University of Engineering & Technology Vice Chancellor regarding disbursement, the VC Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Akram Khan directed Chairman Physics Department, Prof Dr Khaleeq ur Rehman to carry out a probe into the complaint.

The sources further said the chairman while submitting the report stated that there had been some irregularities in disbursement of the scholarships to students and recommended to proceed for action in accordance with law.

They added following the probe, the VC desired to put the case before the syndicate for necessary action, adding however in the meantime Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department intimated the Mathematics Department Chairman Prof Dr Ozair Ahmad that as per findings of the Inquiry Officer allegations levelled against him were proved unfounded and baseless.

When contacted, University of Engineering & Technology vice chancellor Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Akram Khan confirmed that the varsity had sought advice from the Punjab Law Department saying the decision in this regard was taken by the syndicate.
