Civil society joins PUASA in anti-IJT protests
Lahore: Members of civil society, politicians, and NGO representatives
joined the Punjab University's Academic Staff Association (PUASA) for a
massive protest rally that began from the Old Campus at 11am and
culminated with a sit-in by protesters at the Charing Cross at noon. The
protesters demanded a ban on student unions in Pakistan's institutions
and requested Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to
launch an operation in city colleges against Islami Jamiat Taliba (IJT)
activists. The rally was led by ASA president professor Dr MM Saeed
Akhtar and General Secretary Professor Javed Sami and included
representatives of civil society and staff from the University of
Health Sciences, Lahore Region Colleges Teachers Association and the
Aurat Foundation. They chanted slogans against the IJT, sporting black
ribbons and badges and carrying placards and banners inscribed with
slogans such as 'Go Jamiat Go'. Ban on student unions: Pakistan
People's Party MPA Sajida Mir said that Prime Minister lifted the ban
on student unions for the welfare of the students, but IJT activists
exploited this platform for vested interests. She demanded the
government ban student unions and try such delinquents under the
Anti-Terrorism Act to curb such acts of hooliganism. She said it was
tragic that IJT activists beat a teacher. Search operation:
Human rights activist Saeeda Diep said IJT activists were torturing
students and it was tragic that the Punjab government was acting like a
silent spectator to the whole issue. She said Shahbaz Sharif should
launch a search operation in the Islamia College Civil Lines and the
Science College Wahdat Road, which she said are "IJT havens". Another
human rights activist, Shahtaj Qizalbash, said such incidents of
teachers' manhandling were shameful. Qizalbash expressed the hope that
the four culprits along with their accomplices would be apprehended
shortly. He announced that ASA general body meeting would be held on
April 14 at 10am at the Institute of Chemical Engineering &
Technology, but no protest rally would be brought out afterward. The
meeting would comprehensively review the latest situation and the media
would be informed of the future line of action. Qizalbash said after
the vacation of varsity hostels, the concerned officials were
thoroughly checking and preparing lists of illegal occupants to cancel
their allotments. IJT rally: A number of IJT activists also
took out a rally from the Civil Lines College towards the Charing
Cross. The activists shouted slogans against varsity administration and
condemned the rustication of certain IJT activists from PU. Daily times

PU faculty to 'slow down' academic boycott
Lahore: The Punjab University faculty is considering slowing
down its complete academic boycott in the wake of arrest of most of the
nominated accused, who had made a life attempt on Prof Iftikhar Husain
Baloch, and the academic loss of students in semester system studies. Considering
faculty feelings, the Punjab University Academic Staff Association
(PUASA) executive committee had reportedly discussed this issue after
staging a protest on the 12th consecutive day on Tuesday and considered
various options to "slow down" the academic boycott. The final decision
will be taken by the PUASA general body in its meeting on Wednesday
(today). Early on Tuesday, the PUASA staged a protest rally on
The Mall from PU Old Campus to Charing Cross. The protesters, wearing
black armbands and protest badges, were carrying placards bearing
inscriptions that the assailants belonging to the Islami Jamiat Tulaba
(IJT) should be arrested and given an exemplary punishment. The
PU faculty members as well as representatives of civil society
organisations, teacher associations and NGOs, led by PUASA President
Prof Dr Mahr Saeed Akhtar and secretary-general Prof Javed Sami, also
staged a sit-in at the Charing Cross for a while. As teachers marched on The Mall for about an hour, the motorists faced serious problems as traffic remained suspended. Talking
to newsmen, Prof Akhtar said the PU faculty would continue its protest
till the arrest of all nominated accused and the restoration of respect
and honour of university teachers. He said the faculty members would
continue protest although it was their earnest desire that the classes
should be resumed at the earliest. He also thanked Chief
Minister Shahbaz Sharif and senior police officials for their
cooperation and support which resulted in the arrest of three out of
the four culprits. He also expressed his hope that the fourth nominated
accused as well as other over a dozen accomplices would be apprehended
soon. The PUASA president said the association would hold its
general body meeting at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and
Technology at 10am on Wednesday (today), but no rally would be staged
afterwards. He said the meeting would review the latest situation, and
the media would be apprised of the future line of action, accordingly. He
said after the vacation of varsity hostels, the officials concerned
were thoroughly checking and preparing lists of illegal occupants to
cancel their allotments. He said the PUASA was a non-political
body that had nothing to do with political parties. He said the
university teachers were holding peaceful protest demonstrations to
record their protest against the attack on a senior colleague. Dawn

PU teachers continue protest against torture
Lahore: Punjab University teachers on Tuesday took out yet
another protest rally to condemn the assault on a faculty member by
activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and demanded immediate
arrest of all those involved in the incident. The Punjab
University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) had organised the rally
which started from the PU Old Campus, The Mall, and culminated at the
Charing Cross near the Punjab Assembly. PUASA President Prof
Dr Mahr Muhammad Saeed Akhtar and Secretary General Prof Javed Sami led
the rally in which besides PU teachers, representatives of civil
society, college teachers and people from different walks of life also
participated. Wearing black armbands and badges and carrying
banners and placards, inscribed with statements against Jamiat, the
protestors also chanted anti-IJT slogans. Talking to the media,
Prof Mahr Saeed Akhtar reiterated the teachers' stance that unless all
the major culprits and their accomplices involved in the assault on
Prof Iftikhar Baloch were arrested, the PUASA would continue its
boycott of classed, adding: ìAlthough it is teachersí earnest desire
that the classes should be started afresh at the earliest.' He also
expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and
senior police officials, saying their cooperation and support had
resulted in the arrest of three out of four culprits nominated in the
FIR. Prof Mahr said the ASA General Body meeting would be held
on Wednesday (today) at 10am at the Institute of Chemical Engineering
and Technology, but no protest rally would be brought out after the
meeting. He said the meeting would review the latest situation
and the media would be apprised of the future line of action. He said
that after the vacation of PU hostels, the officials concerned were
speedily and thoroughly checking and preparing the lists of illegal
occupants to cancel their allotments. In response to a
question, Prof Mahr said the ASA was a non-political body which had
nothing to do with political parties. "The professors are university
employees and our association is neither a political organisation nor
are we playing politics,' he concluded. After observing a sit-in, the
protestors dispersed peacefully. Meanwhile, dozens of
activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba took out a rally on Tuesday to
criticise the Punjab University (PU) administration for, what they
termed, the unjust expulsion of students from the university. The rally
started from the PU Old Campus and culminated at Charing Cross near the
Punjab Assembly soon after the PU teachers rally on the same route
against the IJT for injuring a senior teacher ended. The
protesting IJT activists termed the closure of PU as anti-education
step, alleging that the VC was playing with future of students. IJT
Lahore nazim Asghar Nazeer said that owing to the strike the PU
teachers were enjoying leisure while sitting at their homes and drawing
salaries. 'However, the students who are suffering will not rest till the PU is reopened,' he said. IJT
PU chapter nazim Hasaan Bin Salman, the son of Jamat-e-Islami (JI)
leader Hafiz Salman Butt, said the vice-chancellor had a grudge against
Jamiat, adding that the university was closed to punish the students
who supported the IJT. He said nothing could be recovered during the
operation against Jamiat at the PU hostel. It is pertinent to mention
here that academic activities have been suspended at the PU since April
2, 2010 a day after some IJT activist thrashed and injured Prof Dr
Iftikhar Hussain Baloch, the chairman of the PU disciplinary committee.
The PU Academic Staff Association (PUASA) had announced that the
academic activities would not resume at the university until all those
nominated in the FIR were arrested.

Taseer for end to violence on campuses
Lahore: Governor Salman Taseer has said that the automatic
dismissal of any student resort to violence against a professor would
be warranted, stating that the respect and honour of the teachers was
of paramount importance. He was talking to a delegation of the
Islamia University Bahawalpur, headed by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Bilal
A Khan and Bahawalpur Commissioner Mushtaq Ahmad, which called on him
at the Governorís House on Tuesday to resolve the ongoing crisis of
student violence against the university teachers. According to
a handout, the delegation apprised the governor of the beginning of the
problem in June 2009 when Prof Dr Shahid Naveed was beaten by students
and an FIR was lodged against 11 of them. The same professor was
attacked in September the same year and another FIR was lodged in
October 2009. On February 19, 2010, the campus and office of the VC
were ransacked by students. The governor said the issue of
on-campus violence and vandalism needed to be resolved practically and
not politically. He also recommended counselling for the students
involved in violence and requested the MPAs and MNAs to refrain from
inciting politicised student violence. A recommendation was also
put forward by the governor for the formation of a committee to
specifically tackle the incidents of campus violence. Meanwhile,
Salman Taseer, talking to a USAID delegation, has said that the US
should not restrict funding to the public sector institutes but it
should also invest in the high quality private universities. The
delegation, headed by Administrator Dr Rajiv Shah and Chief of Staff
USAID Islamabad Sean C Carroll, called on Salman Taseer at the
Governorís House on Tuesday. The governor said that a large
proportion of funding to Pakistan ended up in the pockets of
consultants and contractors in the US. He suggested that the US should
invest in universities, as many of students, especially female ones,
come from far off cities and did not have a place to stay, adding that
the positive message, the US wished to send across Pakistan, could be
conveyed to the future leaders of the country. He said that a large
proportion of the funding to Pakistan ended up in the pockets of
consultants and contractors in the US. Taseer said that it was for the first time that he saw a real change (in US attitude towards Pakistan).

demonstration in front of the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday, demanding the

of the Punjab government. They were holding banners inscribed with
their demands and raising slogans against the UHS administration for
denying them their due right to regularization. The All Pakistan Clerks
