PU striving to produce quality graduates: VC
Lahore: The Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran
has stated that the varsity is striving to increase the number of
quality PhD faculty in order to ensure that only high quality graduates
and researchers are produced at the campus. He stated this while
briefing the visiting 10-member media delegation from Bangladesh about
the academic and research activities and overall contribution of the
varsity at the provincial and national level in his office committee
room here on Friday. Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Jamil Anwar Ch, Registrar
Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan and Director External Linkages Maria Maldonado
were also present on the occasion. The Vice-Chancellor said highly
knowledgeable and expert faculty is considered to be the backbone in
the promotion of higher education because their excellence and
expertise drastically affects the quality of educated lot that they
produce. He said Punjab University is the largest provider of high
quality education and research with a student community of over 30,000
and has a teaching tradition that goes back more than 128 years. He
said students belonging to middle and lower middle classes from length
and breadth of the country mainly seek admission in this seat of higher
learning. He further said remarkable progress has been achieved
under its ongoing PhD programme with the consequence that against the
annual average of 41 PhDs during the last 18 years (1990-2007), an
annual average of 116 PhDs has been achieved during the last two years.
Similarly, against the national average of 22 percent of PhDs to
faculty members, the current average of PU PhDs to faculty has risen to
33 percent, he added. He said we are offering outstanding support to
the students fraternity in all areas of university life in addition to
extending them an enabling academic environment to achieve excellence
in their educational and research pursuits. He also expressed the
hope that in view of our longstanding religious, spiritual and cultural
bonds of brotherhood with the Bangladeshi brethren, exchange of
delegations of faculty and students between the universities of both
the countries can further strengthen the mutual relations of Pakistan

LUMS wins two positions
Lahore: The Lahore University of Management Sciences on Friday secured first two
positions of the LCCI Business Plan Competition while the third
position went to Kinnaird College. The Business Plan Competition was
jointly chaired by Vice Chairman of Punjab Board of Investment &
Trade Pir Saad Ahsanuddin, LCCI Senior Vice President Ejaz A. Mumtaz
and Vice President Faisal Iqbal Sheikh while LCCI former President Mian
Muzaffar Ali and former Vice President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad were also
present. The competition was inaugurated by former LCCI President
Shahid Hassan Sheikh. The idea behind the Business Plan Competition,
which was initiated by LCCI Vice President Faisal Iqbal Sheikh in 2006,
was to encourage the young graduates so that they could be able to

GCU wins bilingual declamation contest
Lahore: The Government College University Debating Society has won the
All Pakistan Bilingual Declamation 2010 at the University of Arid
Agriculture, Rawalpindi. GCU student Saadul Hassan was declared the
Best Urdu Speaker of the contest while Ali Zafar secured third position
in humorous English debates. Meanwhile at a co-curricular contest
at the said university, GCU student Hafiz Obied Ullah stood second in
Qirat while Saad Farooq declared third in a singing competition. GCU
Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab has congratulated the GCU orators on

UHS employees strike goes on
Lahore: Contract employees of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) continued their
protest against the varsity administration on 23rd consecutive day on
Friday. Dozens of employees joined a hunger strike camp setup at
Chairing Cross in front of the Punjab Assembly on the Mall Road. They
criticizing the UHS Vice Chancellor for not regularizing services of
contract employees expressed concerns over government's unresponsive
attitude over the issue. The protestors said alleged contradictory
statements by the UHS VC were disturbing.

CPSP Workshop
Lahore: The concluding session of primary surgical skills and computer internet
workshop was held on Friday. A press release said the moot was
organised by College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
Speaking on the occasion, CPSP Regional Director Prof Khalid Masood
Gondal said the expansion project of the College of Physicians &
Surgeons Pakistan would be completed this month. He further said 6,000
under training doctors and 1,500 medical teachers had participated in
