Students protest 'dept's closure'
Hyderabad, Apr 14: Students of the music department of Sindh
University and those associated with JEAMIST ideological committee held
a demonstration and staged a sit-in at the zero-point on Tuesday in
protest against the alleged closure of the department. Demanding removal of in-charge of the department Mohammad Qasim Maka,
they raised slogans against the university administration and did not
allow the point buses to leave the university. Police and
university officials tried to persuade the protesting students to
disperse but failed. Police attempt to take the point buses out of the
campus led to an exchange of hot words between police and the
protesting students. Police also resorted to baton-charge the
protesters, leaving students including Ms Azadi Joyo and Ms Sindhu
Memon slightly injured. Mashooq Qambrani, Kashif Soomro and Raza Nohani
were detained by police. Later, students of all groups of the
JSSF staged a demonstration at the main gate of the hostels and outside
the vice-chancellor house. Police and Rangers were called to control the situation. JSSF leaders Imtiaz Panhwar, Ahsan Wagan, Raja Qureshi and others
criticised the university administration and said that neither books
nor furniture were available in the hostels while the point buses had
broken down. They condemned police excesses against the protesting students. Dawn
