Students facing problems due to shortage of teachers
Rawalpindi: A large number of students of Punjab government schools are still facing problems in getting better education only because of the shortage of teachers of respective subjects in several educational institutions of the province.

Sources in the education department said that against the total shortage of 2,500 teachers, the Punjab government sanctioned 1,400 posts of teachers for recruitment in primary, elementary, secondary and high schools all over Punjab. In this connection, the Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif in January this year also allocated funds for completing the recruitment process.

As per directives of the Punjab chief minister, the educational directorates invited the applications from the intending candidates through print media for test and interview to fill the vacant posts. Against 1,400 posts the concerned authorities received over 35,000 applications from all over Punjab. However, after completing the process, the educational directorates recruited only 997 teachers while the remaining posts still remain to be filled.

According to sources, the void of 403 teachers would remain vacant and would not be filled. The shortage of teachers has not been met fully and still 1,403 posts remain vacant. As a result of failure of concerned authorities to fill the over all gap, there is dearth of teachers in Punjab educational institutions, largely affecting the studies of the students particularly getting education in high schools.

The students having no option left, hire the services of private tutors at their homes who allegedly charge huge fees for teaching one subject. It remains beyond the reach and limits of poor students to pay exorbitant fees to the private tutors. A good number of students also get education in private academics for achieving better results in exams. The charges of private academic institutions are also sky rocketing. The students in order to pay huge fees to the private tutors and private classes, also do part time jobs at night time in private departments , shops etc.

Executive District Officer (EDO), Education, Rawalpindi district, Qazi Zahoor ul Haq admitted the fact that against 1,400 sanctioned posts, only 997 teachers have been recruited. He said the remaining vacant posts would also be filled within next couple of months. He said funds were allocated for filling 1,400 posts however, the entire amount was not released. "This is the reason only 997 vacancies of tutors were filled," he claimed.

On the other hand, Sagheer Aalam, president of All Punjab Teachers Association, Rawalpindi district said that in many schools, there are surplus teachers. "The shortage of teachers could be met by transferring the surplus teachers to those institutions where the problem occurs. But this is not being done due to poor governance and improper system and planning of the concerned officials in the educational directorates," he alleged.
