HEC devises framework for engg education
April 25(The News): Prominent experts from various engineering educational institutions of the
country met under the chairmanship of the Executive Director, Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Dr Sohail H Naqvi at the HEC Secretariat recently. The meeting
was held to develop a uniform and standardised framework for the development of
engineering curricula in order to bring the engineering programmes at par with
the international standards. The ways to advance the state of technology and
meet the needs of the industry were also discussed.
While discussing the
framework the experts agreed that the engineering programmes being offered at
the universities in Pakistan will consist of a total 130 to 136 credit hours for
the four-year B.Sc./B.E. degrees and the engineering courses will be 65 to 70
per cent of the curricula. Emphasis will be given to leadership and
communication skills, technical report writing and professional ethics.
Social sciences will be an essential component of the whole programme
and the curricula will be prepared to develop self-learning and analytic
thinking so as to promote research culture in the universities.
