Assault on English Dept students at PU
LAHORE, April 23(Daily Times): The Punjab University's
disciplinary committee will submit its recommendations in a week on punishing
Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) workers for assaulting two English Department
students a couple of weeks ago.
The recommendations will be presented to
the university vice chancellor.
PU Registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan said on Sunday that the inquiry committee had sent its final report to
the varsity's disciplinary committee for its recommendations. "A final decision
will be taken on the committee's recommendations," he added.
Last week
the vice chancellor expelled 23 IJT workers/students for ransacking the
varsity's pharmacy festival on the pretext that concerts were being organised at
the festival.
A large number of IJT activists, while demonstrating
outside the Lahore Press Club on Sunday, condemned the university vice
chancellor for expelling the 23 students.
The workers, carrying banners
and placards, chanted against the vice chancellor and demanded his removal. They
alleged that the students were 'unlawfully' expelled, saying the vice chancellor
could not expel the students before issuing a show cause notice to
them.
PU IJT nazim Muhammad Ayub alleged that organising concerts on
campus was in violation of the university's calendar. He also alleged that IJT
students were expelled for expressing their solidarity with lawyers over the
Supreme Court chief justice issue. He said, "We don't accept an army vice
chancellor for the university. He also said the vice chancellor had introduced a
dictatorship on campus.
