Shakespeare day celebrated at KU
Karachi, April 25(The News): In keeping with departmental traditions, Karachi University's English department
celebrated Shakespeare day on Tuesday, April 24. Chairman English Department,
Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan, cancelled classes after 11:00 a.m. so students could
attend the function. Due to unavoidable circumstances, the function could not be
held a day earlier as planned, on April 23, which is Shakespeare's
birthday.
President of the Shakespeare Association of Pakistan, and the
senior most professor of the English department, Dr Raffat Karim addressed
students and teachers on this occasion. Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Akhlaq
Ahmed was also present. He said in his speech that students of the English
Department should perform plays on a larger scale and invite outsiders to attend
them. The chairman gave an entertaining presentation regarding urdu translations
of Shakespearian plays. Students of the department performed scenes from
Shakespearian works such as 'Macbeth', 'Hamlet' and 'Julius Caesar'. They also
performed a hilarious parody called 'Much ado about Something'. At the end of
the programme, the entire department was treated to an enormous cake to
celebrate Shakespeare's birthday.
