Shakespeare day celebrated at KU

Karachi, April 25(The News): In keeping with departmental traditions, Karachi University's English department celebrated Shakespeare day on Tuesday, April 24. Chairman English Department, Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan, cancelled classes after 11:00 a.m. so students could attend the function. Due to unavoidable circumstances, the function could not be held a day earlier as planned, on April 23, which is Shakespeare's birthday.

President of the Shakespeare Association of Pakistan, and the senior most professor of the English department, Dr Raffat Karim addressed students and teachers on this occasion. Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Akhlaq Ahmed was also present. He said in his speech that students of the English Department should perform plays on a larger scale and invite outsiders to attend them. The chairman gave an entertaining presentation regarding urdu translations of Shakespearian plays. Students of the department performed scenes from Shakespearian works such as 'Macbeth', 'Hamlet' and 'Julius Caesar'. They also performed a hilarious parody called 'Much ado about Something'. At the end of the programme, the entire department was treated to an enormous cake to celebrate Shakespeare's birthday.
