Allama Iqbal Open University Autumn semester admissions
Sept 5 last date for AIOU admission
Islamabad, Aug 28, 2008: Director Admission of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU),
Sohail Nazir Rana has announced that September 5, is the last date for
submission of admission forms for Autumn semester 2008.
He made it clear
that there would be no expansion in the said date while detailed information
could be obtained from the university's website, which is www.aiou.edu.pk. He
said that prospectus and admission forms are available in the Allama Iqbal Open
University, Sector H-8, Islamabad, and also in the 36 regional
offices.
He said university has already sent computerised admission forms
to the students at their respective addresses and in case given address of the
students if some one unsuccessful to got the admission farm then he can get it
from our university website. He said candidates could buy new admission forms of
FA/BA from university campus or from other regional offices. The News

Accreditation system for teachers suggested
Islamabad: Educationists, professors and experts have suggested for
ministry of education to put in place a system for standards and accreditation
of teachers' education to produce quality teachers for the country's educational
institutions.
They were addressing a national seminar on "Standards and
Accreditation of Teacher Education", organized by Ministry of Education in
collaboration with UNESCO under its project titled "Strengthening Teacher
Education In Pakistan(STEP)" to seek proposals and suggestions from
international and national experts in education field for designing
accreditation system for teachers, here on Wednesday.
The speakers included
Dr Sharon A. Siverts, George Mason University USA, Dr Gregor Allen Ramsey, from
Australia, Jorge Sequeria, Representative UNESCO, Dr. Randy L. Hatfield,
Director Education in USAID office, Secretary Education Jahangir Bashar, Dr
Munawar Mirza, University of Education Lahore, and Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed, Joint
Education, ministry of education and Mahmoo H.Butt, Allama Iqbal Open
University.
They were of the opinion that quality of teaching and learning in
teacher education institutions was far from satisfactory level in Pakistan, thus
there was a need of restructuring the teacher education system in the
country.
They said that many studies pointed out the absence of a quality
assurance mechanism of teacher education had allowed teaching institutions to
develop and implement teacher education programmes at their discretion leading
to uneven and poor quality of education in the country.
Having thoroughly
studied education system in the USA and given the needs of Pakistani society, Dr
Sharon Siverts said that Pakistan should introduce international standards for
quality teacher education, including fieldwork, internship and performance based
assessments.
She said that there was a need to hold social dialogue to take
all stakeholders on board to make the system more effective for upgrading
teacher education.
Dr Gregor Allen Ramsey said that there was a need of
political will in addition to sustained efforts by the concerned authorities to
produce quality teachers for development of a country.
"In the end it is the
political argument and will that wins the day, and it is important to bring the
decision makers along the system is being developed", he observed.
He
suggested that officials of the ministry should also take concrete measures to
acquire input from all stakeholders within the country to develop a viable
system for producing quality teachers.
Speaking on the occasion, Education Secretary Jahangir Bashir said that the
government was aware of importance of quality teachers and it had been stated in
draft of the National Education Policy that Teacher training arrangements,
accreditation and certification would be standardized and
institutionalized. He said that Pakistan had already taken some steps and the
HEC had established Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (ACTE), which
was working with STEP to develop National Standards for Teacher Education and
the Guidelines of Institutional and Programmatic Accreditation, Certification

Balochistan varsity to reopen today after clashes
Quetta: Balochistan University's Vice-Chancellor Dr Masoom Khan
Yasinzai said on Wednesday that the university, Bolan Medical College and
Agriculture College would reopen on Thursday and a 21-point code of ethics would
be strictly implemented for campus peace.
The university and the colleges
were closed on Aug 6 after clashes between student organisations.
The
vice chancellor said that the code of ethics had been prepared in consultations
with leaders of all political parties and student organisations. He said that
representatives of student organisations had assured the university
