4-year BS honour programme equivalent to Master's
4-year BS programme equivalent to Master's By Khalid Khattak
Lahore, Aug 05, 2008: The Qualification Equivalence Determination Committee has
determined the equivalence of some newly emerging degrees (a 4-year BS honour
programme) to the traditional Masters programme in order to eliminate confusion
regarding the appointment of lectures at the public sector colleges.
A
meeting of the Qualification Equivalence Determination Committee was held at the
Punjab Higher Education Department recently in which representatives of various
public sector universities participated and gave their input in connection with
the equivalence of a 4-year degree programme to the traditional Masters degree
programme.
The new disciplines/ specialization which had been recognized
equivalent to the traditional MA/MSc included MSc Applied Economics and 4-year
programmes including BSc (Hons) Agriculture Economics and BSc (Hons) Economics.
All the honours degree programmes have now been recognized equivalent to MA
Economics.
Similarly, other disciplines like MSc Biology in Plant
Sciences, MSc (Hons) in Life Sciences (if specialization in Plant Sciences), BSc
(Hons) in Botany and BS Botany (both 4-year programmes) have been recognized as
equivalent to MSc Botany.
MSc Biology in Animal Sciences (if
specialization in Animal Sciences), BS in Zoology and BS (Hons) in Zoology
(4-year programmes) have been considered equivalent to MSc Zoology. MA and MSc
Commerce have been recognized equivalent to MBA.
BFA (Hons) 4-year
programme, MA (graphic Arts & Design) and MA (Painting) would be equivalent
to MA Fine Arts while BS (Mathematics) 4-year programme to MSc Math. BS in
Sociology and BA/BSc (Hons) in Social Sciences (4-year programme) have been
considered equivalent to MA/MSc Sociology.
Sources in the Punjab Higher
Education Department said that the issue regarding equivalence of different
qualifications was raised by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) as it
had been facing difficulties in this connection.
Referring to the
equivalence committeeís meeting, the sources said Muhammad Ali Bhatti Director
(Recruitment) of the PPSC informed that a number of applications were received
in PPSC for recruitment to posts of Lectures in BS-17 on the basis of 4-year
BA/BSc degree. He said the issue needed to be decided whether 4-year degree
(after 12 years schooling) could be given equivalence to MA/MSc
degree.
They added the students had also been complaining about the
non-recognition of the 4-year degrees which despite being recognized by the
Higher Education Commission (HEC), were not being recognized by different
government departments.
They said after detailed deliberations following
the recommendations of representatives of public sector universities, the
equivalence committee determined that 4-year/8 semester of studies upon
qualifying minimum 124 credit hours (with admission requirement as Intermediate
or 12 years of schooling) was equivalent to MA/MSc degrees awarded after 4 years
of post-intermediate education for the purpose of employment to posts of
lecturers (BS-17) in government colleges.
When contacted, Secretary
Higher Education Department Arifa Saboohi, who had chaired the said meeting,
confirmed the grant of equivalence of different BS (Hons) and 4-year degree
programmes to traditional MA/MSc programmes by the equivalence committee.
However, she said a summary would be sent to the Punjab chief minister for a
final decision in this regard.

Lahore: The Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT)
organised the first ever "Exit Interviews" with the graduating class.
According to a press statement on Monday, the event was attended by over

"Exit

and staff because they fear victimisation", said Dr Sarwar.
"I have
scanned through the written feedback from around 300 students and it is a
goldmine of information about our institution's processes, faculty, staff and
infrastructure, which would help us improve as an organisation," he added.
The principal plans to make this activity an on-going feature of his
administration and have similar sessions with PUCIT alumni and major employers
of the college graduates in the months to come.
PUCIT also organised a
"graduation night" for the outgoing batches of the various degree programmes
attended by over 450 students, faculty members and senior university
administrators.
Vice chancellor, Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief
guest at the occasion. Students presented comic skits, parodies and "qawwali"
about various aspects of their college life, there.

PPSC barely functioning in absence of chairman
Lahore: The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has become
virtually non functional since July 20 – after the retirement of its chairman,
Tariq Sultan, PPSC officials said on Monday. According to government
statistics, the PPSC chairman is the most competent authority of the commission.
The PPSC secretary only looks after the administrative functions of the
commission. The PPSC chairman conducts interviews for various posts. The PPSC
chairman can assign any member of the commission to make question papers for
competitive examination. He sanctions funds to advertise various departmental
posts. He also allots examination centres to various candidates.
PPSC officials
said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had directed the PPSC to present its annual
report for 2007. They said, "If the CM will ask the PPSC secretary to present
the report, he will be in trouble because he has no idea about recruitments and
interviews." They said about 100,000 applicants were waiting for their exam and
interview calls. They said 500 assistant sub-inspector posts had not been
advertised so far. They said that if a new PPSC chairman would not be appointed
this month then the scheduled interviews would be postponed. The public relation
officer and secretary to the CM were not available for comment. Daily Times
