Our education system
We as a nation live in opium eater paradise. Following the
trodden path, never daring to look for digression, innovation is something alien
to us. Either we are tradition loving people or we have no guts to explore the
horizon for our best. I think later is defining us. Complacency has brought us
to the verge of collapse. Any society can be judged from its education system.
Its education system embodies the approach of its government towards its
citizens. Whether the government wants its citizens to be an active contributor
or mere passive followers.
Education system of a developed country has an aim to
produce an active contributor, thinking mind, and not accepting any thing for
granted unless proved by reason. We inherited an education system which suited
the palate of our colonial master that was to produce dump spectators and blind
followers. It has been almost sixty years that we got independence but our
education system is the same as before independence I.e., aimless, clueless,
stagnant. Development in education sector has been taking place on theoretical
front as well as on technological front .On the theoretical front all the
stereotyped concept of teacher, student, school and classroom has been changed.
Teacher is no more the source of all knowledge as his dominant role in the
classroom has been relegated for the best of student and education. He is no
more first among many, rather one among many. The flow of knowledge is not from
one side rather from both sides. Students are not supposed to be passive
recipient rather an active contributor.
Modern education system stresses upon
creativity of students. Classroom environment should be such that it charms the
student and he comes to class happily. Fear and threatening atmosphere should be
done away with. It impairs the student's personality beyond repair. These are
some of the theoretical suggestions which have revolutionized the education
system. All this had been possible due to research in child psychology. On the
technological front, use of computer, projector and T.V should be increased in
the classroom. Students learn better through these contrivances than through
traditional way. Something on computer TV absorbs their attention completely. Of
course economic constrain comes in the way, but "where there is a will there is
a way" should be the motto of a teacher. Question-and-answer method should be
adopted by the teacher. It produces self confidence and creativity in students,
teaching through group activity is far better than lecturer method.
In case of
English language teaching, the usual practice is grammar translation method,
where students are made to learn the rules including the rules for tenses, the
rules for changing active voice to passive voice and from direct to indirect
speech. The problem with this method is that students' whole time is taken in
learning and memorizing these rules. It results in poor efficiency in speaking
and comprehension. The modern approach is language acquisition. To use technical
terminology, maximum exposure is to target language. When the students will be
able to comprehend and speak in the second language, then they shall learn the
rules by themselves. The aim in teaching language is to produce good speaker and
listener and for that language acquisition approach is best. Conscious learning
has extremely little role in language learning. The role of a teacher is very
important. He is the agent of change. The need of the hour is to expose our
teachers to the innovation in the field of teaching. This can be done by
arranging seminars and training courses. Media has far greater role to play in
this direction.
