BC holds event for UK-bound students
Islamabad: UK-bound students got a lively pre-departure informational
event organized by the British Council and sponsored by Etihad Airways and
Gerry's Travels in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The event was held to
brief students on what to expect from their time spent living and studying in
the UK as university students, said a statement issued here on
Friday. They were provided helpful advice on a number of subjects
including travel plans, visa formalities, accommodation, opening a bank account
and items that could be taken along in luggage. All of the 200 students
attending the events in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad had already received
offers of admission from UK universities and colleges for the September/ October
2009 intake. They had numerous questions and queries to ask about life in
the UK which British Council staff answered in detail. The event was also an
opportunity for the young people to meet and become acquainted with their fellow
student travellers. Eminent UK Alumni were invited to share their own
experiences of studying in the UK. The alumni answered students' questions, gave
valuable advice, and related interesting anecdotes of their own wonderful time
spent in the UK. An energetic Speech Competition was organized where five
students spoke on "Why did you choose UK as the best educational and cultural
learning experience". The three best speakers in each city won spectacular
prizes consisting of free return tickets to the UK, gift hampers and excess
baggage facilities from sponsor Etihad Airways and free discount cards from
sponsor Gerry's Travels. Amer N. Khan, Country Manager Etihad Airways
Pakistan said, "Etihad Airways takes a keen interest in facilitating the
development of young minds and this opportunity gives us the pleasure to support
the future professionals of Pakistan at this point in their lives." Amin Wali
Mohammad, Managing Director of Gerry's Travels said, "We at Gerry's are proud to
be part of this event and to introduce the Student Travel Association card
(STA). STA enables students to bridge the gap between different
countries and cultures and experience the world. As the students go out on their
own, the STA card opens a world of travel opportunities for them during their
semester breaks." The students expressed deep appreciation for the event and the
presentation given by the UK alumni because of all the valuable insights they
offered.

Students ask UET to waive off fees
Peshawar: The students of the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology hailing from the
restive districts of volatile Malakand Division have demanded of the varsity
administration to write off their fees and other charges like other educational
institutions of the province. The affected students were of the opinion that all
the universities, professional and other institutions had refunded fees to the
students of the militancy and military operation-hit districts of the province
except UET. They said the UET administration had remitted fees of some students
of Swat only and ignored the students of Dir, Buner and Malakand Agency. They
demanded of the government to press the UET administration to refund them their
fees also. The students also criticised the UET administration for not providing
them hostel facility. The news
