Students clash at Government Delhi College
Karachi, Aug 20: Two students were shot and wounded on Wednesday in a clash
between two groups at Government Delhi College in Karimabad, police said.
They said that the workers belonging to two student organisations
exchanged fire and attacked each other with clubs and rods. The police
said that separate FIRs (578 and 579/2009) were registered on the complaints of
the wounded victims, who belonged to rival organisations. One of the
wounded, identified as Jaffer, was shifted to the JPMC, and the other, Qaseem,
was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The police said that seven
people were arrested following the clash.

New Sindh University campus may open next month
Hyderabad: The Sindh University (SU) campus in Mirpurkhas will start
functioning from next month and a meeting to review the administrative set-up
and its requirements was held on Wednesday. The SU Vice-Chancellor,
Mazharul Haq Siddiqui presided over the meeting which was attended by
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Mirpurkhas Campus Prof Dr Iqbal Ahmed Panhwar, Registrar
Muhammad Saleh Rajar, Director Planning and Development Muhammad Ali Roshan,
Project Director Ahmed Ali Abassi, Director Finance M.M.Siddiqui and others.
Prof Dr Iqbal Ahmed Panhwar in a report stated that the campus building
would fulfil initial requirements. Admission procedure and publicity and
printing of catalogue were also discussed. A separate bank challan for
Mirpurkhas campus and account had been opened. A four-member committee
comprising Director Institute of Information and Communication Technology,
Project Director, Director Finance and Purchase Stores Officer was constituted.
Admissions will begin next month in five disciplines including MBA,
Computer Science, Information Technology, Geology and Commerce. Dawn

Varsity starts employees health insurance
Karachi: The launching ceremony of new and better health insurance scheme
for employees and their spouses, children and parents held Wednesday. Vice
chancellor DUHS, Masood Hameed Khan briefied the media about the scheme and its
facilities. He said that university spending Rs35 million on the health
insurance and about 2 thousand employees of DUHS will be benefited. He said
overall 7571 people will be provided health insurance cover. He said that no
deduction would be made from the salary of employees and employees can avail
this facility not only in Karachi but also in panel hospitals all over
Pakistan. Professor Masood Hameed Khan further explained that if any employee
or any member of his family needs emergency hospitalization after using his
health insurance cover limit then he/she will have an extra 50% coverage
limit. All Karachi debate competition planned Co-curricular activities,
especially debate competition, play a basic role in boosting mental and thinking
capabilities of youth. Naib City Nazim Karachi Nasreen Jalil stated this
while talking to a delegation of Dhaka Group of Educational Institutions and
Daira Adab-o-Saqafat (International) at her office on Wednesday. She announced
that a debate competition would be organized in collaboration with the City
District Government Karachi. She lauded the services of Daira Adab-o-Saqafat,
saying with the public and private partnership education and literacy could be
further boosted.The delegation was led by Syed Azfar Rizvi. Prof Sabir Nizami
and Syed Muhammad Asghar were the members of the deelagion. Syed Azfar Rizvi
said an All Karachi Debate Competition will be held in the month of October 2009
in which students of schools, colleges,universities and Madaris would be
invited. He said in the first phase, the competition would be held at town level
in October while final competition would be held amongst 1st, 2nd and 3rd

Celebrations at Dawood Public School
Karachi: Dawood Public School (DPS) held its
Independence Day celebrations at the school premises on Thursday. Participants
of the celebrations, which included the students and staff members, gathered
around a huge Pakistani flag measuring 20,000 square feet. The flag was
