We could never have imagined that he'd die at 24
Karachi: The family of Ahad Faridi, a final year student of the MBA evening programme at
Karachi University, who lost his life on Thursday evening while trying to save
his cell phone from being snatched, remain in a state of shock and grief.
Ahad, son of Kamal Faridi, belonged to a family of six, and was the
second eldest among his siblings, including three brothers and sisters. "The
family had a lot of expectations from him, as he was about to complete his MBA,
and establish a lucrative career. We could never have imagined that he'd die at
24 years of age," Mirza Fahad, Ahad's cousin said. The
deceased's family lived in Federal 'B' Area Block 10, and Ahad would teach
students in the street adjacent to theirs. According to Fahad, Ahad was on his
way to teach his tuition students, when a stranger on a motorbike tried to
snatch his cell phone. The assailant did not seem to have a gun, Fahad said,
adding that perhaps this was the reason why Ahad tried to strangle him. However,
the mugger fired three bullets from a gun hidden inside his clothes, killing
Ahad on the spot. Talking to the residents of Federal 'B' Area Block 10,
it has bees learnt that a security guard was present on the scene of crime, but he
had nothing with which he could fight. "My cousin got murdered near his house in
front of a security guard by an unknown person. What law in this country
allows such an incident to happen? From now on, I think we should stop our
children from going outside, that seems the only solution," Fahad
said. The neighbours of the deceased had good things to say about Ahad,
after which the allegations of a killing due to enmity seemed baseless. "Ahad
was like our elder brother and he belonged to a very respectable family. Neither
he nor any of his family members caused any problems in the past; in fact they
were of great help whenever someone needed them," a friend of Ahad, who
preferred to remain anonymous. The funeral proceedings of
Ahad Faridi were conducted after Friday prayers yesterday.
