Dawood College students worried about future
Karachi: The Supreme Court's decision to declare November 3, 2007 emergency as
unconstitutional, has endangered the future of more than 500 engineers who have
recently passed out from Dawood College of Engineering and Technology, Karachi,
as the decision has deferred the degree awarding status of the institution.
The students are worried about their future and waiting for the approval of
an ordinance from the parliament as the administrative control of the college
has been vested in the Senate, while the Syndicate and Academic Council of the
College are responsible for the governance of the college, well-placed source in
the college said on Friday. On the other hand, the authorities
concerned are not interested in paying any heed to the issue, whereas the
current administration of the college is declined to comment on it. It is
pertinent to mention here that the college has been awarded a degree awarding
status by the government with effect from 31-10-2007 through an Ordinance Number
LXIII of 2007 promulgated by the former President of Pakistan General (Retd)
Pervez Musharraf. The ordinance, giving degree awarding status to Dawood
College, had become the part of PCO. After the Supreme Court's decision, the
college is no more got the degree awarding status hence BE degrees could not be
issued to the students belonging to Batch No 4. It is worth mentioning that
the college offers degree programmes in the field of Electronic Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management, Metallurgy &
Materials Engineering and Architecture. The Higher Education Commission has
allocated Rs197.87 million for the strengthening of academic infrastructure of
the college. The source said, "Earlier the college was affiliated with
Mehran University, the affiliation had been terminated in October 2007. After
the SC verdict, now Mehran University can issue degrees to the said students as
per past practice. Students have contacted to the college administration to
discuss the problem but the college administration is reluctant in solving the
problem. The current situation has raised a question over the future of the
institution." The nation
