Education dept ignoring City Govt schools
Karachi: Junior Brigade is one of the important features of Karachi-based
schools that run under the City government, while the authorities concerned in
the Education Department are continuously neglecting this important discipline
due to lack of vision and unsupportive attitude, the informed sources told The
Nation on Thursday. Moreover, the funds of only Rs5,000 which were allocated
for them were abolished in 2001. The Junior Brigade movement was established by
the Directorate of School Education Karachi in 1952. Its main aims and
objectives were to impart Elementary Military Training, Map Reading, Field
Camping, Leadership, Civil Defence, First Aid and Road Safety, Sense of
Patriotism, Social Services, Discipline and others. It was running
successfully till the end of 1990s. However, later these activities were reduced
due to lack of proper attention by the authorities of Education
Department. As per Section 17 of the By-laws of Junior Brigade Karachi, only
registered units would be entitled to carryout activities of Junior Brigade
Organisation under its name and pattern. Both boys and girls students of
Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools, Elementary Schools, and other Local
bodies' schools are entitled to join the Junior Brigade. However, the Junior
Brigade officials had issued their calendar for activities in 2007, but they
were unable to carry out the activities due to shortage of funds and other
reasons. Sources said that despite all hardships, they managed to establish
their head office at Karimabad education department office. The purpose of
Junior Brigade was to enable the youth to deal in the crisis including natural
calamities, war-like situation in the country and other emergency matters. The
students are skillful to coop with such type of problems. For the last several years, Karachi is continuously facing horrible natural
calamites including thunderstorms and heavy rains, causing loss of dozens of
lives and property damages along with paralysing routine life. The scouts,
girl guides, civil defence personnel and junior brigade in any civil society
have been created for the purposes to assist the government departments in any
disaster-like situation. But unfortunately, the responsible authorities in the
government did not understand the importance of these institutions which not
only provide healthy environment to the students, but also produce a helping
hand to combat critical situations. An official of the education department
told that till the 1980s, the cadets of Junior Brigade were presented guard of
honour in front of foreign presidents and prime ministers. He said that so
far, 250 cadets of Junior Brigade were still attached with various schools for
promoting the spirit of Junior Brigade. "They have enlarged their capabilities
including defence departments and now they are the reputable citizens of the
country. Likewise, many such old participants of Junior Brigade continued to
organise different activities," he added. The last gathering of Junior Brigade
was held at its head office at Karimabad education department, where they
demonstrated handling firefighting incident. The Nation

SALU restores law college
Nausharo Feroze: The Shah Abdul Latif University restored the Naushahro
Feroze Law College on Thursday. The university had established the college in
2003 in the Government Degree College under its Naushahro Feroze campus. It was
closed about a month ago following allegations of misuse of funds. The
university's registrar Dr Badaruddin Ujjan said that the university would depute
a person to look after affairs of the college till it held interviews for the
appointment of the principal and lecturers. He said that when the
college was closed, its principal and lecturers stood dismissed. The university
would appoint a new faculty and management and hold an inquiry into the
allegations of misuse of funds by the previous management, he said.
Arbab Ali Chandio and Abdul Salam Luhrani, former teachers of the
college, said that the campus was not run in a fair manner by the former
principal. They said that only seven lawyers had been appointed as
lecturers and one of them had only one and a half years experience. The
management had misused funds, they alleged. Lawyers welcomed the
restoration of the college and demanded inquiry into allegations of misuse of
funds. Dawn
