School topper goes missing after joining Swat Taliban
Mingora: Students and teachers at the Government Higher Secondary School Barikot
were missing their two brilliant colleagues as the school reopened on August 1
following the clearing of the area from militants and the return of the
displaced people.
The first thing both teachers and students did was to
offer fateha (prayer) for their colleague and teacher Fazal Jabbar, who lost his
life along with his other relative when a mortar shell landed on his house in
Naway Killay in Barikot area on May 11. "Unlike rest of the school
buildings, ours is safe but the killing of our kind and devoted colleague
pierced our hearts," said Ibrahim, principal of the school while recalling Fazal
Jabbar, who was serving as Certified Teacher (CT). The second shocking
revelation for the teachers and students was that Yousaf Khan, a student of the
school, who got top position in the matriculation examination 2007, was
missing. The board of honour displayed on a wall just behind the main
gate of the school still bears the name of Yousaf Khan, but he is missing now
and is feared dead as he had joined the ranks of Taliban about a year ago.
"He was such a brilliant student ... I can't believe he can join the
militants because he has no such inclination during his school days," said the
school principal. Taliban had become role model for students and young
men in almost all areas of Swat during their heydays. Youth, many of them
students like Yousaf Khan, feeling a charm in holding guns and stopping and
searching people on the roads, recalled Muhammad Saleh, a physical education
teacher. Residents say many among the militants in the area were
teenagers. They developed liking for the Taliban because of their apparent pomp
and show and later on some of them joined their ranks. "Many of those young men,
some of them students, are now missing," said another teacher. Earlier,
the security forces in Swat had claimed arresting several teenaged boys, who
were picked by the militants to be trained and used as suicide bombers. The
militants prefer teenagers as they can be easily influenced and molded as
suicide bombers and foot soldiers.

Urdu booklet on Persian grammar published
Peshawar: 'Yusra Nama' - a concise publication on Persian grammar - authored by
Syed Ghayyur Hussain, a noted academician, writer and researcher, has hit the
stalls and is available for those fond of learning the language. The
36-page booklet with easily understandable words and grammatical rules has been
dedicated to a former director general of the Iranian Culture Centre at
Peshawar, Aghae-Mohsin Abu Talbi, who, the writer says contributed a lot for the
promotion of Persian language during his four-year stay in Peshawar from 1992 to
1996. Talbi, who exhibited his great love for Pakistan languages while
serving in Peshawar and encouraged and supported a number of Pashto and Hindko
writers, is now heading the Cultural Wing of the local government of
Tehran. Syed Ghayyur Hussain, hailing from Ustarzai, Kohat, has been
teaching Persian for the last two decades at the University of Peshawar and
Cultural Centre of Islamic Republic of Iran. He has to his credit a number of
publications and research-based papers. The researcher has authored a book that
has been included in the MA and M Phil course of study. Another of his book
"Pakistan Ki Qaumi Aur Ilaqai Zubano Per Farsi Ka Asar" highlights the impact of
Persian on Pakistani languages. He is working on three more books -
'Farsi Asbaq', 'Farsi Ashaar' and 'Farsi Boliay' that might be published
soon. In the preface to the 'Yusra Nama', Professor Dr Irshad Shakir Awan
of Urdu Department of Qartaba University Peshawar has lauded the contribution
from Ghayyur towards the promotion of Persian language and literature and said
the book would make Persian learning easier. "Though there are number of good
books on Persian grammar, yet the 'Yusra Nama' will be more beneficial for those
trying to learn the language in the shortest possible time," he
said. Professor Dr Riaz Majeed of the Linguistic Department of the
university has welcomed the booklet as a rare contribution and termed it an
effort to make Persian language learning easier and bring Urdu and Persian
closer. Besides grammar rules, the booklet has three sets of Persian words
translated into Urdu. Coming out of printing press on July 31 and available at a
nominal price of Rs30 on all bookstalls in the market, the book would contribute
towards promotion of Persian language. The news
