Sindh University to introduce semester
Hyderabad, Aug 25: Semester system would be introduced in post-graduate degree colleges
affiliated with the University of Sindh. Before the session starts, all academic
activities, including admissions, classes and examination would be notified in
the academic calendar for the information of students. This was decided
in a meeting of representatives of the affiliated degree colleges and the
university administration on Monday. The meeting decided that five post-graduate
degree colleges would be selected at the initial stage from Hyderabad to
introduce semester system. Meanwhile, the Controller of Examinations,
University of Sindh, announced on Monday that date for filing of examination
forms for MA, MSc, MCom previous and final at post-graduate colleges under
annual examination 2008 is extended up to Aug 25 with a late fee of Rs 500. From
Aug 26 to Aug 31, examination forms would be accepted with a late fee of Rs
1,000.

JSQM calls for check on weapons in varsities
Hyderabad: Sindh is a citadel of peace and sending dead bodies from here
is not agreeable to the people or place, said Basheer Khan Qureshi, Chairman
Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz. He said this on the death of Niaz Baloch of Sindh
Agriculture University, Tandojam. Basheer Khan Qureshi, General
Secretary Dr Safdar Sarki and other leaders in a joint statement condemned the
use of arms in educational institutions. They blamed the intelligence
agencies and the administration of educational institutes for the proliferation
of arms and added that there was no check on students in Sindh, Mehran and
agriculture universities, on carrying arms. However, majority of students were
humiliated at hostel gates or in faculties during body searches, the JSQM
leaders said.

Early renovation of schools ordered
Peshawar: NWFP Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education Sardar Hussain
Babak has directed all the executive district officers (education) and the
concerned of his department to ensure early renovation and maintenance of work
at the schools where internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been
staying. He issued these directives during his visit to different schools
where the maintenance and repair work was under process, said a handout issued
on Monday. The minister on this occasion took a stern notice of various
deficiencies on behalf of the staff in different schools. He directed the
head masters to ensure the standard and completion of all maintenance work being
carried out with the support of the Unicef and issue a completion certificate
after physical verification; otherwise, they would be held responsible for any
shortfall. The Unicef is carrying out maintenance and repair work in
about 450 primary schools (boys & girls) of Peshawar district where IDPs
from Malakand Division had stayed. The organisation is taking practical steps to
rehabilitate the electricity, sanitary, drainage and other such facilities of
all GPS and GGPS so that all such facilities could be re-established before
opening of the schools on September 1. Meanwhile, the minister approved
the upgrading of the Government Girls Middle School Soora, District Buner to
high level. On this occasion, the minister reaffirmed his commitment that
all-out efforts would be made to improve the education standard in the province
both qualitatively and quantitatively. The news
