UHS raises standard for distinction
Lahore: The Academic Council of the University
of Health Sciences (UHS) has raised the standard for awarding
distinctions in various professional examinations, including MBBS and
BDS, from 80 percent to 95 per cent marks from annual examinations 2010.
The 8th meeting of the UHS Academic Council was held on Tuesday
with UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Malik H. Mubbashar in the chair.
Principals and senior faculty members of the affiliated institutes
attended the meeting. The council unanimously agreed that from this year
only those candidates would be awarded distinctions in any subject who
would secure 95 percent or above marks in that subject in any
professional examination. The council also recommended increase of total
marks in the subjects of Biochemistry and Behaviroual Sciences from 100
to 200 in first and second professional MBBS examinations respectively
from next academic year. The members also agreed that MS, MD and MDS
programmes should continue, however, these programmes must be upgraded
and thoroughly overhauled so that they could meet the highest standards
of postgraduate medical education and research anywhere in the world. They
observed that these programmes should be run according to the spirit of
the original programmes, as they combined knowledge and scientific
enquiry and ability to analyse data and convert it into logical
conclusions. The news

Court seeks govt answer on vacation
Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday sought a reply
from the Punjab education secretary on a petition filed by the All
Pakistan Private Schools Welfare Association against extension in summer
vacation. Association's president Zulqarnain Shah says in his
petition that under the education code private schools can observe
summer vacation for two months and ten days only, but the government
extended the vacation for 21 days, which is 'illegal'. Apart
from this 'illegality' on the part of the government, precious time of
students was being wasted, the petitioner said and asked the court to
set aside the notification regarding extension in vacation. Justice Ijazul Ahsan accepted the petition for hearing and directed the education secretary to file his reply by Aug 30. Dawn

WB team discusses PU reforms, expansion
Lahore: A six member World Bank team held a
detailed meeting with the Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor and
other senior faculty members on Tuesday with a view to reforming and
expanding the existing participation rate in higher education sector to
improve its contribution to future economic growth and prosperity of the
country. PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran briefed the
visiting delegation about the ongoing academic, research and
extra-curricular activities and contribution being made by the faculty
staff and student community. Lauding the role of Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Dr Kamran said the HEC funding had helped increase
varsity faculty participation in international conferences and access to
research journals, leading to significant improvement in research
output. However due to recent cut in HEC funds and increase in
salaries, pension and medical allowance, the public sector varsities are
facing severe financial crunch and their research projects are likely
to receive a serious setback. He said for any university, quality of its faculty held paramount importance for improving higher education standard. The
World Bank team comprised Senior Education Economist Naveed Naqvi, Lead
Education Specialist Halil Dundar and Consultants Benoit Millot, Zubair
Bhatti, Mehnaz Haider and Ayesha Khan. Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr
Jamil Anwar Chaudhry, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan and other
officials were also present. Later, the delegation took a round of
various departments of the varsity as well. The news
