Private campuses reopen, defy govt orders
Lahore: Challenging the writ of the government
once again, private schools have opened their campuses, ignoring the
government's notification according to which all private and government
schools were scheduled to reopen after September 9. Some private
schools had opened their campuses on August 16 while many leading
private schools reopened on August 20, Friday, with examination schedule
starting from August 23, Monday. A notification of School Education
Department, Punjab, issued on May 31, a copy available with The News,
clearly mentions that schedule of summer vacation would be observed in
all the schools (government/privately managed) in Punjab w.e.f June 1 to
September 9. It is pertinent to mention that most of the leading
private schools had also defied the government's notification by not
observing the summer holidays from the day fixed by the government in
June this year. The stakeholders are quite critical of the
government's inability to bring private sector under some kind of
control as, over the years, they have been demanding a regulatory body
for private schools but to no avail. It is important to note here
that many of the private schools have opened campuses in the name of
summer camps duly allowed by the Punjab government in June, 2010. The
Lahore Literati is among those private schools that opened their
campuses on Friday while Esna Foundation, Fairfield High School and many
other schools have informed parents about reopening of their schools
from 23 August. According to the government, the decision to allow
private schools for summer camps was taken in the wake of extended
summer vacation as compared to previous years, adoption of five days
week and squeezed academic session. The stakeholders also argued
that the government had failed to ensure uniformity with regard to
syllabus followed by private and public sector schools but it was
pathetic that the government could not ensure uniformity in working of
schools. The News could not reach Schools secretary Muhammad Aslam Kamboh for comments. When
contacted, EDO Education Dr Muhammad Arshad said the government had
taken strict notice of private schools' not following its directive and
opening up campuses before the announced schedule. "All such schools
are being closed", Dr Muhammad Arshad said, adding that the people
should contact EDO Education Office in case they have any complaints
against private educational institutes. The news

Private schools allowed holding partial classes
Lahore: The education department has allowed private schools to
call the students of Class V, VIII, IX, and X for preparation of their
examinations. Education EDO Dr Mohammad Arshad said that the
department had only allowed the private schools to open the
institutions before Sept 15 so that the studies of those students whose
exams were approaching should not affect. "However, the schools
calling the students of other classes will face action," the EDO said
and added that two institutions – The Punjab School and Kurban School –
had been issued notices for violating the government direction. The
Punjab government had extended summer vacation to Sept 15 for all
public and private schools, primarily for Ramazan and loadshedding. The private schools associations had protested the decision and urged the government to allow them to open the institutions.

Visitors to BVH suffer: Police rough up doctors, QAMC students
Bahawalpur: A police contingent let loose its indignation at the
Bahawal Victoria Hospital doctors who joined the students in their
protest. Also, visitors to the hospital's OPD got more trouble
than relief on Friday as some students of the allied Quaid-i-Azam
Medical College forced the doctors to join them in their protest. The students boycotted their classes for the second consecutive day,
demanding exemption from loadshedding and other concessions. With the doctors staying away from duty, the patients faced
inconvenience. The police baton-charged the protesters to prevent any
untoward happening. QAMC Principal Dr Ijaz Hussain Shah said that the administration prevented the doctors from joining the protest.
BVH Medical Superintendent Dr Altaf Malik said some of the doctors
accompanied the students but they resumed work shortly afterwards. District Police Officer Babar Bakht Qureshi told this correspondent
that there was no truth in the statement of the Pakistan Medical
Association's Punjab chapter that 70 doctors had been arrested. He said only 20 QAMC students had been taken into custody in connection with Thursday's violence. It was learnt the police released the students after their successful negotiations with the college administration. Dawn

PU directed to submit record
Lahore: An election tribunal of Lahore High Court on Friday directed
the Punjab University to submit the record of BA degree of PML-N MPA
Farah Deeba till August 24 on a petition seeking her disqualification on
the basis of bogus degree. On last hearing, the court had sought
the degree record of woman MPA but the varsity failed to submit the said
record on Friday. The tribunal showing annoyance delay gave fresh
orders to the university in this regard. The LHC election tribunal was
hearing a petition filed by Shahida Parveen challenging the election of
MPA Farah Deeba for allegedly having a fake degree. The petitioner
submitted that Farah, daughter of comic legend Rangeela, was elected as
the Member of Punjab Assembly on a special seat reserved for women.
Parveen said that Deeba had allegedly lied to the Election Commission
and her degree was fake. Majid Karim Khokhar, the petitioner's
counsel, submitted that Farah's actions were in violation of Articles 62
and 63 of the Constitution and requested the court to declare her
election illegal. After hearing the arguments, the tribunal issued a notice to Farah Deeba for August 20 and sought record from the university. The nation
