School timings after vacation
Lahore: The Punjab School Education
Department has announced schedule for schools during holy month of Ramazan after
annual summer vacation ends on August 14. It is learnt that from August
15 the schools would remain open from 7:45am to 12.45pm throughout the week
except Friday when schools would open on 7:45am and close at 11:45am. It
is pertinent to mention here that different teacher associations and parents of
the students have been demanding the government extend annual summer break in
the wake of ongoing holy month of Ramazan and hot weather conditions. However
the department officials argue that in case the summer break was extended, the
schools would be unable to complete academic year. They believe extending summer
vacation was not possible this year. Nonetheless, it seems that private schools
will not follow the government's schedule for reopening of schools in the wake
of pressing demands of the students and their parents to reopen schools in first
week of September after Eid-ul-Fitr.

Gomal varsity VC denies misuse of authority
Peshawar: Gomal University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mansoor Akbar Kundi has explained his position to the
governor in the wake of the Governor Inspection Team's report that found the
varsity administration guilty of misuse of authority in some
cases. He said that he had been appointed by the
then governor on the recommendation of the search committee after going through
the entire procedure. "There was nothing wrong with my appointment as the
vice-chancellor. But soon after I took charge, a mafia in the university became
active against me," he said. The VC said he had never misused his
official authority or used his emergency powers to make recruitment,
particularly against senior positions. He rejected the report that the assistant
registrar (legal) Abdul Hamid Kundi was his family member or his friend. He said
that he had been appointed by the internal selection committee on six-month
contract on fixed pay in view of the excessive litigation at the university.
The post has, however, been advertised and a suitable candidate would be
appointed, he said. As far as the posting of Khalid Dawar as director finance
was concerned, he said that he was the most honest and skilled person and during
his tenure made handsome saving for the university. He argued that he
didn't appoint Hameedullah Khan, a retired associate profession, as controller
of examination by using his emergency powers. This position too has been
advertised and suitable candidate would be appointed from among the applicants
once the selection board is in place. The VC insisted that the
university under his charge was doing well. "The university affairs were run
smoothly despite leg-pulling and conspiracies against me by my rivals. No
untoward incident happened at the university, which is one of the biggest seats
of higher education in the province, during the last two years," he added. He
said that he had tried his best to take every decision on merit. The news
