Another forged award list scam hits PU
Lahore: While the Punjab University administration has yet to act against the officials involved
in preparation of forged award list at the Institute of Communication Studies,
another alleged scam of similar nature has emerged at the varsity s Institute of
Education & Research. According to sources, the issue related to
submission of unauthorized awards lists has now surfaced at the Department of
Technology Education of the Institute of Education & Research (IER) through
which some 18 student, who alleged failed in the exam, have been declared
successful. The IER administration, however, denies any illegality and
terms the whole issue a result of rivalry among the faculty members. The
sources said a faculty member in an application to the PU Vice Chancellor, the
Dean Faculty of Education and the Director of IER alleged that the award lists
of a course Applied Electricity , session 2009-2011, prepared by a former
faculty member Dr Hameed Nawaz were replaced with unsigned award lists, thus
passing all students who had failed in the exam of Semester Fall, 2009.
However, Dr Muhammad Saeed Shahid, who was acting director of IER a
couple of weeks ago, said a faculty member, Mahfooz Ahmad Kamboh, had submitted
an application and alleged the results were tampered with as the award lists
submitted were without signature of Dr Hameed Nawaz. Dr Saeed added that
he held an inquiry and contacted Dr Hameed Nawaz to present award lists signed
by him so that the matter might be investigated into and action taken taking
against those responsible. Dr Hameed failed to produce his signed award lists,
despite a lapse of more than a week, he added. When asked, Dr Saeed
Shahid, however, confirmed that the award lists submitted at the record office
were unsigned and insisted that the same were also valid as no one except
relevant teacher could submit the award lists. He added that the staff who
received the award lists was also questioned as to why they had received
unsigned award lists. The staff confessed their mistake as they could not notice
if the award lists were signed or not at the time of submission, he said.
However, a faculty member, seeking anonymity, questioned as to how the
results could be announced on unsigned award lists. He was of the view that,
since the award lists were unsigned, the same were no more valid and result
could not be announced on basis of these award lists. When contacted, Dr
Hameed Nawaz said he himself had submitted the award lists and the same were
signed by him. He alleged the award lists were allegedly replaced after the
submission, therefore, they did not have any signature. Since he had submitted
signed award lists, how he could produce the same now, he said, asking how the
unsigned award lists could be considered valid and authentic. IER
incumbent director Dr Mumtaz Akhtar, who is custodian of all record of the
institute, did not receive call despite repeated attempts on her cell phone.
It is pertinent to mention that, last year, an inquiry initiated on
orders of PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran in result tempering and
other illegal activities at the varsity s Institute of Communication Studies
(ICS) had recommended dismissal of both the incumbent and former directors of
the institute besides registration of criminal case against institute s
ex-director Prof Dr Mughees Uddin Sheikh. However, no action has so far
been taken against them, with Dr Mughees working with a private group of
colleges after his retirement. The news
