Punjab govt decides to recruit 3,400 teachers in Pindi division
Rawalpindi, Aug 01: The Punjab government has finally decided to recruit teachers in the government

been directed to start the recruitment process.
Executive Director (Education) Qazi Zahoor Ahmed said that as per directions of
the government, in all 3,400 posts of teachers/instructors would be filled in
the Punjab government schools and the process of recruitment would start

He said that the secretary Punjab Education Department has
sanctioned 3,400 posts of teachers. Applications from candidates would be sought
by the end of August. He admitted delay in recruiting of teachers. However, it
would be filled up now and the process would complete by the end of September
According to the sources in the government schools, continuous
delay in recruitment of teachers the education of students affected. The
concerned authorities instead of filling up the posts are assigning the working
teachers to take additional classes. Interestingly the teachers who don t even

of the headmaster or headmistress. They are transferred to far-flung stations as
Those teachers who take extra classes on the orders of the
headmaster/headmistress are not paid extra allowances or benefits. Moreover, the
students particularly of higher classes remain unsatisfied with the education
provided by the teachers who take extra classes. The students have no other
option but to get the help of private tutor at their homes. The news

IIUI may send back Arab faculty
Islamabad: The administration of International Islamic
University Islamabad (IIUI) is contemplating discontinuing the services of its
As many as two dozen deans and professors from the Arab world have been
associated with the university since its establishment in 1980s.
"The Arab faculty was brought on board during the Ziaul Haq regime. They have
been valuable assets and their services have been unparalleled especially when
the local faculty does not come close to matching their teaching techniques,"
said an IIUI official on condition of anonymity.
The 22 to 24 Arab professors, who are highly respected worldwide, made up the
faculties of Islamic Studies, Sharia and Law and Arabic.
Most of the Arab, Sudanese, Egyptian and Turkish faculty were associated with
world's renowned educational institutions, including Al Azhar University and
Cairo University in Egypt. Some are serving as deans of the faculty at the
"The move sounds unreasonable because these faculty members draw salaries
from their parent universities. The services they render are invaluable because
of their high quality teaching and research experiences," said the official.
He argued in favour of keeping the Arab staff members especially when many
Pakistani PhDs did not meet the criteria set by the Higher Education Commission
(HEC) to become professors, assistant professors and lecturers.
Recently, the IIUI had terminated services of nine members of the teaching
staff who had been associated with the university for the past five to six years
However, Director General Administration and Finance, IIUI, Gulzar Khawaja
denied any such idea.
"The Arab faculty members are hired at the government level. The university
does not even have their contract details. There is no such move on the table,"
the DG said.
On the other hand, the source said the services of the foreign faculty
members were hired and contracts signed at the university level. Dawn

Pure Mathematics conference begins at QAU
Islamabad: With an aim to enhance the understanding of mathematics and to provide an opportunity to
the working mathematicians, encourage the exchange of ideas with colleagues at
the national, as well as international level, a three-day International Pure
Mathematics Conference 2011 started here.
The conference was organised by
Quaid-i-Azam University in collaboration with the Pakistan Science Foundation,
National Centre for Physics, Preston University and the Pakistan Mathematical
The Pakistan Mathematical Society, Quaid-i-Azam University has
organised the series of International Pure Mathematics Conferences from 2000 to
2010. The 12th International Pure Mathematics Conference 2011 is a sequel to
these conferences. During the conference almost 9 foreign mathematicians as
keynote speakers while 42 speakers will give short-communications. The
conference received an overwhelming response at international level as 84
well-known mathematicians from some 26 countries attended the inaugural
QAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Masoom Yasinzai while
addressing inaugural session said Mathematics is playing a significant role in
the development of science and technology all over the world. Pakistan cannot
afford to undermine its role in the global affairs in general, and science and
technology in particular. Since Mathematics is one of the most useful branches
of science, Pakistan will not lag behind in contributing its share in its
development. He urged the Pakistani mathematicians to remain in touch with the
international community of their counterparts.
He said the congregation
of mathematicians will be a significant step forward in setting new trends of
research in all the branches of mathematics. I am sure the IPMCs will have
centrifugal impact on mathematics in Pakistan, and our country will benefit from
the novel ideas which will emerge from the proceedings of these serial
conferences, he added.
Former federal minister for law, Dr. Babar Awan
appreciated the vice-chancellor s vision to internationalise the university. He
said: We are living in a time where we cannot ignore the fast passed global
changes. He emphasized the need to enhance the contribution of institutions of
higher learning in science, technology and innovation, he added.
Dr. Qaiser Mushtaq, Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences, QAU, President, Pakistan
Mathematical Society, while addressing the audience said: The uplift of our
economy requires due attention to science and technology. For development in
science, a sound mathematical foundation is a pre-requisite. Therefore, it is
imperative that we develop an adequate mathematical culture in Pakistan.
Responsibility for promoting and improving mathematics in Pakistan rests
primarily with the academics. If mathematics is to be properly supported by
society, then mathematicians must not forget their obligations. Universities
must go beyond measuring success only in terms of grants or publications, and
researchers must recognize their larger obligations, he added. The news
