PU Shia students pray on road on 5th day

LAHORE, Aug 13: The Shia students at the Punjab University (PU) on Monday prayed collectively on road on the 5th consecutive day as the PU administration did not allow them from offering their prayer in the PU mosques.

On Sunday the Shia students had written to PU chancellor Khalid Maqbool requesting him to take action against the PU authorities.

Imamia Student Organisation (ISO) spokesman Syed Farhan said, "We want the PU administration to give us permission to pray collectively and we have written an application to the governor in this regard." He said the Shia students across the country had denounced the PU administration for its discrimination. He said Shia students at the Karachi University, the Peshawar University and the Quaid-e-Azam University had staged demonstrations. He said the PU administration was unable to realise the sensitivity of the issue. He said the Shia students would continue their protests till the PU administration opens mosques for them.

The PU students have been sending a couple of text messages denouncing the PU authorities for not allowing the Shia students from praying collectively on the campus mosques. Some students have also been criticising the Shia students for politicising the issue through text messages.

PU registrar Dr Naeem said the PU administration would not allow anyone to disturb the PU atmosphere. He said every Muslim has the right to say his/her prayers according to his/her sect. He said the issue would be settled soon. Daily times
