Governor approves Rs 5.5m projects for Punjab University
LAHORE, Aug 14: The government is spending billions of rupees on
development projects in public sector universities so that the educational
standard could be improved, said Punjab Governor and Punjab University (PU)
Chancellor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool. Speaking at a meeting about development
projects in the PU on Monday, the governor said the PU was the oldest university
of Pakistan that was providing education to people from all parts of the
country, adding that the PU was playing a vital role for the development of the
country.
In the meeting the chancellor gave the approval of projects worth 5.5
million. He said there was a need to start new disciplines and upgrade the
existing ones, adding that since the PU had a long list of development projects,
the government needed a hefty amount to start those projects. Maqbool said the
government was setting up campuses of public sector universities in other cities
and was taking steps to improve the quality of research in universities to the
international standards and to bring the public sector universities at par with
the private ones.
The governor declared that some departments of the PU were a
national heritage and they should be preserved. He said that research should be
carried out in oriental studies to educate people about the development in these
disciplines. He said the PU Health Centre should be upgraded to a Centre for
Medical Research and Islamic Studies Centre should be made an International
Research Centre. New technology, he said, should be utilised to train the
students in Information Technology so they could compete at international level. Daily times
