Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) speaks out against HEC
LAHORE, Aug 25: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association
executive body has again passed a resolution condemning the Higher Education
Commission for "unnecessarily interfering in public universities, imposing
policies on them without consulting faculty members and threatening to stop
grants".
The meeting, chaired by Dr Mumtaz Salik at the Punjab University
on Friday, called for withdrawal of the circular issued by the governor for
construction of joint offices for teachers and abolition of quota for the
children of university teachers and employees.
The resolution supported
the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations' demand
for teachers' promotions, revival of criteria for recruitment of assistant
professors, cancellation of Balochistan University ordinance, appointment of
senior university teachers as vice-chancellors, provision of PhD facilities to
university teachers on a priority and recognition of quality research
journals.
The PUASA executive body agreed to support and participate in
the FAPUASA protest campaign by observing black day on Sept 5 and strikes on
Sept 19 and 26. The PUASA has called its general body meeting on Aug 29 to
consult all faculty members on this issue. Dawn
