Punjab University Academic Staff Association(PUASA) slams entry tests

LAHORE, Aug 30: Admissions in the Punjab University (PU) should be given on merit and entry test for the admissions should be abolished, Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) president Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Salik said on Wednesday.

He said the PUASA would only accept merit as admission criteria, as thousands of poor students were deprived of admission to the university due to the entry tests.

He said the authorities concerned should eliminate the National Testing Services (NTS) at departmental level. The PU should shift back to the old merit based admission system, he added.

He said it was 'tragic' that several students were denied admissions in M Phil due to the implementation of the NTS.

In the PUASA general body meeting at the university, Salik said the government universities should be made free of 'military influence', adding that a PhD vice chancellor (VC) should be appointed in the PU. "Policies of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) are blocking the upgrade of teachers' status." He also said the HEC should refrain from influencing the universities.

"The HEC and the VC – a retired military officer – in the Blochistan University are troubling the teachers by implementing the Model University Ordinance (MUO)," he said. He criticised the government's action against the teachers who supported the chief justices of Pakistan during the recent judicial crises. He said the government should take back its decision against the teachers, otherwise the PUASA would protest against the government and by cot classes. Salik demanded the government should give performance awards to the PU teachers and upgrade them to grade 19. He said the PUASA would protest if authorities would not consider its demands and change the admission policies. Daily times
