Demand to withdraw police from Peshawar University
PESHAWAR, Aug 7: Several students' organisations of the University of
Peshawar on Monday expressed resentment over the worsening law and order
situation on the campus and attacks on students.
Students'
representatives called upon NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai to take
notice of corruption and nepotism allegedly by Vice-Chancellor Haroonur
Rashid.
Speaking at a press conference, Muttahida Talaba Mahaz president
Naveed-ur-Rehman said that armed attacks on students in the university had
become routine, creating a sense of insecurity among them.
The MTM
comprises People's Students Federations, Islami Jamiat Talba, Pakhtun Student
Federation and Chitral Students Association.
On July 31, he said, a
student of the Law College Ihsanuddin was gunned down by unknown assailants and
his colleague Muhibuddin sustained injuries in hostel-1.
Next day,
bandits looted a student near the Aga Khan Auditorium and injected him with
intoxication who was later admitted to the Khyber Teaching Hospital.
The
criminals continued the practice of looting the students as another student was
deprived of his car near the Razi Hall hostel. The attackers injured the student
on resistance.
PSF chairman Ijaz Yousafzai, IJT Nazim Rafiullah and PkSF
president Kifayatullah Marwat were present on the occasion.
Mr Rehman
said that a policeman of the Campus Police attempted to kidnap a girl student of
the physics department, but she was rescued when the other students made hue and
cry.
The university administration remained tightlipped over the issue
and no action was taken against law enforcers, he said.
The student
leader said that 700 police officials had been deputed on different check-posts
and police stations in the university, but they are yet to ensure
security.
He alleged that most of the police officials were either
directly involved in the criminal activities or supported the
criminals.
The studnet leader demanded of the government to withdraw
police from the university to restore peace that was essential for
study.
Mr Rehman alleged that Vice-Chancellor Haroonur Rashid had
appointed his relative as lecturer and added that the person did not deserve the
post.
He said that the VC utilised Rs5.8 million on foreign trips that
was allocated for the scholarships of students.
He said the teachers
resigned from the membership of senate and syndicate in protest against the VC's
corrupt practices.
The students also criticised the university's provost
who spent million of amount on the visit of the blue eyed students and other
luxuries.
They demanded that the government should arrest the killers,
bandits, withdraw police from the university and transfer the VC forthwith
otherwise students would take to streets and the government would be responsible
for any eventuality. Dawn
