Student, teacher clash: QAU delays issuing student's degree

ISLAMABAD, Aug 28: The Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) has delayed issuance of Master degree to its Area Study Centre student Aamir Ranjha till the completion of enquiry by a three-member committee, constituted to probe into an incident of Aamir's clash with his teacher Munawar Hasan.

Aamir Ranjha approached newspaper for help after he found the enquiry committee working at a snail's pace, virtually hurting his prospects to excel in professional life.

He said that even the findings of the committee about the incident were not being made public and he was kept in dark. He doesn't know if the university administration would take some action against the teacher Munawar Hasan, who had been alleged of victimizing the students of his department and promoting favouritism.

"Although I have passed my exams and got my marks sheet, the university administration is not issuing the degree. I have been asked to wait until the decision of the committee comes, he said, adding that he was finding it difficult to find a job without the degree.

A source within the faculty, while requesting anonymity, said the enquiry committee has taken its decision and sent it to the disciplinary committee, which would implement it but due to the procedural delay the matter had not been settled yet.

The students of ASC at QAU suffered from a trauma and mental disturbance during their final examinations because of a teacher-student clash held at the campus when the fight occurred some three months back between Aamir Ranjah and his teacher Munawar Hasan.

According to the students, Munawar Hasan had involved councils of the university in the issue and made it an ethnic issue, which was not true at all in the real sense. It was basically what they called, a personnel issue.

He gathered all the Sindhi students and went to attack on him with hockeys and bats at his hostel room situated at the university but fortunately he remained safe as he had left the campus on Vice Chancellor's advice.

The students of the department alleged that the teacher was not appropriate for teaching due to his strange and abnormal behaviour. They believed that nobody was interested in taking subjects, which Munawar Hasan taught because of his threatening and torturing attitude towards students.

"He has psychological problems and not fit for this profession. He pressurizes the students all the time that he will fail them and will not let them pass out from the university", one of the students from the ASC said.

He victimized about seven students and they, in spite of many attempts, could not clear their subjects as he has been failing them due to personal grudges, said the students. They were also of the view that they didn't have very high hopes from the committee because it did not take their version seriously.

"May be we are his friends and class fellows that's why the committee did not give importance to our statements. And we found the committee members quite biased against Aamir", said a student. The nation
