KU mourns death of Qurratul Ain Hyder

Karachi, Aug 25: Tributes were paid to one of the most illustrious and outstanding figures of Urdu literature, Qurratul Ain Hyder, at a condolence meeting held at the KU vice chancellor's office on Friday. The vice chancellor, Prof. Pirzada Qasim, presided the meeting, which was attended by the registrar, deans of faculties and senior professors of the university.

Speaking on the occasion, the vice chancellor said that the late Qurratul Ain Hyder has enriched not only the Urdu literature but has got a prominent position in world of literature as a whole. She won acclaim from literary circles the world over and her books have been translated in many languages. He said one of the greatest novels of our time, Aag ka Darya (River of Fire) is enough to prove her place in the world literature. Prof. Pirzada said she devoted her whole life to enriching Urdu literature and her achievements have helped the Urdu language be counted.

The Registrar, University of Karachi, Prof. Muhammad Rais Alvi, said that the literary standard of Aag ka Darya has overshadowed her other books. However, he said it is a fact that all other novels, short stories and sketches can be matched with the highest literary values. According to him, Hyder has influenced and inspired three generations since the Independence and for many years, the subcontinent perhaps may not produce an author of her stature.

Speaking on the occasion the Dean, faculty of arts, Dr Muhammad Shamsuddin, said that Quratuain Hyder was a great literary personality of the 20th century and she will continue to be the one of the most prominent figures of the 21st century.
