HEC denies involvement in VCs' appointment
LAHORE, Aug 22: The Higher Education Commission
(HEC) has said that it has no role in appointing vice chancellors (VCs) in
government universities, but added that the VCs should be excellent scholars and
administrators.
The HEC, in a press statement issued on Tuesday, said it
had been improving the quality of higher education to meet international
standards of teaching, learning, research and academic services.
Some
teacher organisations claimed that the HEC was appointing army personnel and
bureaucrats as vice chancellors in government universities.
The HEC
press statement said that VCs were appointed by chancellors through a
transparent search committee. "The search committee consists of five eminent
scholars and citizens of Pakistan who recommend three names to the chancellor,
after the position has been advertised," the statement added. "The chancellor
then appoints one of the three people as VC as recommended by the search
committee," the statement said. It said that statements by some people that the
HEC was involved in the VCs' appointments were incorrect. The HEC had not
represented any search committee for VCs' appointment, the statement added. Daily times
