DCET future architects plan solutions for city
KARACHI, Dec 16, 2007: From a correctional facility
for women to an inter-bus terminal, the Architecture students of the Dawood
College of Engineering and Technology (DCET) presented their work for a
pre-final jury Saturday.
Their projects tackled emerging challenges such
as global warming, protection of the environment and recreational facilities for
the common citizen. For example, final-year student Komal Hayat presented
'Five-Star Hotels with a Theme of Moghul architecture' insisting that
quake-resistant structures be used that would also be environment friendly.
Fatima Akifa argued that a better physical environment produced better
social behaviour. She said that social behaviour could improve if
jails were. Congested and ill-ventilated rooms and cells created physical and
psychiatric problems that also hurt the metabolism of the inmates.
Ismat
Naureen focused on homes for the homeless. Homes by NGOs were nothing but a
combination of walls and a roof. They should also enjoy their lives in good
buildings.
Fahad Baig designed an inter-city bus terminal to cater to
one-third of the city's buses. He emphasized that the roof should be made of a
shell structure of copper covered by grooves. Ars. Komal Parvez, Mishal, Amir
Nazir Chaudhry, Khadijatul Kubra, Bab-e-Ali and Mubarak were the jury. Daily Times
