Urdu varsity students rally for demands
ISLAMABAD, Dec 13, 2007: Students of the Federal
Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) on Wednesday took to
streets against the university's administration for disregarding their
demands.
Dozens of students stepped out and shouted slogans like, 'save
our future', 'appoint permanent vice chancellor, 'ensure permanent faculty',
'get accreditation from Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).' They also held
placards carrying messages against the university administration. A heavy police
contingent was also present there to avert any untoward incident.
The
students regretted the authorities' failure to appoint a permanent VC for the
last eight months. They said that absence of the permanent VC was causing
problems of the students to pile up. They complained of having to run from
pillar to post for the resolution of their problems.
The students said
that PEC was opposed to registering the university for lack of permanent
faculty. The non-registration has put future of the electrical engineering
students at stake, they said.
They also slammed the university
administration for closing the campus for an indefinite period to prevent them
from agitating.
The protesting students urged the district administration
officials to arrange a meeting with the president, who is the FUUAST chancellor,
on the matter.
The officials assured them that they would arrange their
meeting with Higher Education Commission (HEC) officials. They also asked the
university administration to unlock the gates of the university to the
students.
The students announced to continue their protest until their
demands were met.
Meanwhile, two students of the university fell
unconscious during the hunger strike and were shifted to a local hospital.
Urdu University to shift to Chak Shehzad
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Urdu University
of Arts, Science and Technology has prepared PC-1 for its new campus in Chak
Shehzad as its existing building is hired from the WAPDA.
Sources at the
university said on Wednesday cost of the project was set at Rs 400
million in the PC-1. They said the project proposal will be sent to the Higher
Education Commission (HEC) for approval within a week.
125 acres of land
had been selected for the campus in Chak Shehzad near the campus of COMSATS. The
university's current building is too small to accommodate the students as it has
only 26 classrooms while 60 classrooms are required.
The sources said
the administration was running the university in three shifts to accommodate
around 2,500 students. The university's library was not up to date and its
extension was needed, they said. Daily Times
FUUAST sealed after protests
ISLAMABAD: The administration
of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) vanished
from the scene after sealing the university seeing a weeklong protest and hunger
strike of the students.
The students are observing a peaceful protest
demonstrations and hunger strike for the last one-week against the
non-registration of the Electrical Engineering Department of the university with
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and the constant vacant post of vice
chancellor for the last two years. On Wednesday the students tried to hold
protest rally outside the campus but the security officials reached on time and
stopped them from doing that. The also contacted the administration and opened
the university for the students. A student, Hamza Salman, fell unconscious
because of hunger strike and admitted at PIMS Hospital.
The students seeking
anonymity said they are constantly getting threats from the Dr. Asar, Head of
the Department of Electrical Engineering that they would be expelled from the
university and the police has registered a case against the protesting students.
However, the security officials have denied any registration of a case against
the students.
The students said the administration of the university cheated
the students and showed them fake documents that the PEC has registered the
department for one year but when the PEC rejected this on its website the
administration blocked the site at the campus.
The students have been
boycotting the classes for the last seven days and staging sit-in and a hunger
strike camp to meet their demands, which has badly affected their routine
academic activities. They vowed to continue their protest demonstrations until
their demands are fulfilled. The Nation
