More than 2,000 students sent to foreign universities: governor
LAHORE, Dec 12, 2007: The government has sent more than 2,000 students from across the country
to foreign universities for PhD and MPhil studies in the last seven years,
Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the
Beaconhouse National University's (BNU) Second Convocation ceremony at
Aiwan-e-Iqbal, he said Pakistan was passing through a challenging time, as
elections were only 25 days away. "Several political forces want to benefit from
students," he said.
The governor said the government had fulfilled its
promise of elections. Several political parties, he said, had come forward to
contest the upcoming elections. "The elections will be fair and transparent," he
added.
Students' enrolment had increased three times in universities and
faculty with doctorate degree had been increased manifold, he said. "To provide
higher education to the people living in remote areas, 14 campuses of different
universities have been set up in these areas," he said. Maqbool said billions of
rupees had been spent to the improve infrastructure of
universities.
"Pakistani economy has made great progress in the last few
years. A lot of jobs have been created due to the government's prudent
policies," said Maqbool. He said economy was growing while development was
taking place in various sectors including finance and
telecommunication.
The governor also appreciated the BNU management,
saying the university had progressed in the last few years.
BNU vice
chancellor Sartaj Aziz said the university had taken several steps to provide
quality education at the school. "The faculty members have been increased to 58
and student enrolments have also increased from 580 to 930," he said, adding
that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had improved the status of the
university from category X to W.
Later, the governor awarded degrees and
gold medals to the students secured top positions. Daily Times
