IJT active at PU despite VC's assurance
LAHORE, Dec 06, 2007: The Punjab University (PU) administration has apparently given a
free hand to Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and become a silent spectator as
Jamiat's unauthorised' activities are going on despite the vice chancellor's
assurances of placing a ban on its activities.
PU students and teachers
said on Wednesday that Jamiat activists were "actively" and "openly"
organising different events, without seeking permission from administration, on
campus and at varsity hostels and the administration was not taking any action
against them.
They said political and "unauthorised" activities had been
banned at PU especially after Imran Khan episode but administration was taking
no action against IJT activists for organising such events. "Such a response
from PU admin has puzzled university students," they said.
Sources in
the university revealed that Jamiat had organised an event "Nazim Talaba Kay
Rubaru" (nazim with students) at PU Hostel No 14 on Tuesday night. They said
that Jamiat again organised an event on Wednesday night at varsity's Sheikh
Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC) where varsity chapter nazim addressed students and
varsity employees".
"No one from the administration had stopped the
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) students' wing from organising these events," they
added.
"The IJT nazim is regular visiting varsity hostels and addressing
students and speaking on the prevailing political situation in the country,"
said a hostel student requesting anonymity.
Students are also urged to
tell him problems being faced by boarding students as if he is an official of
the university", he said.
A senior PU professor asking not to be named
said Jamiat's recent move to visit hostels and campus and speaking to students
was part of its sympathy-gaining movement since a majority of students had
turned against Jamiat "for running a parallel administration within the
university as was exposed by the arrest of Imran Khan".
PU chapter IJT
nazim Attiq-ur-Rehman was not available for comments as he was busy in an event
at university's SZIC. However when contacted PU chapter IJT secretary
information Imran Kiyani said: "We are not organising any political programme in
the university. We are students of this university and have a right to arrange
any event".
"Jamiat is a well organised students' organisation and it
exists in PU and other educational institutes of the country," he said. "We have
been organising events in hostels and on campus from past many days and the VC
had not banned any such activity," he added.
Interestingly, a Jamiat
press statement about Tuesday's event at PU hostel said that Attiq-ur-Rehman
visited various hostels of the university and addressed students.
It
said that Attiq urged students to reject politics of opportunists and support
Jamiat for Islamic revolution in the country.
Acting PU VC Prof Dr
Muhammad Arif Butt was not available for comments. When contacted, Registrar
Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said the administration had kept a vigilant eye on
students' activities at hostels and campus and no one was allowed to carry out
any unauthorised activity.
He dispelled the impression that
administration had given a free hand to Jamiat activists. He said every thing
was fine at the PU and no one was organising any events at hostels or on
campus. The News
