KU student discovers Garden has the most art lovers
KARACHI, Dec 10, 2007: A University of Karachi Visual Studies student went out into the city
and made people get together on the street to freely paint on a board. All they
had to do was use red to indicate their interest in art and black to suggest
indifference. What did she discover? That Garden has the most art
lovers.
This curious student is Sahar Rashid who chose Public Art as her
major. Her work and that of her classmates is up on display on campus in their
annual degree show that continues till Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If
you are interested in finding out how the other 17 towns scored on the art
scale, Sahar's 3D wooden bar graph will give you an idea.
But this is
not all. Sahar teased with the public in another experiment by putting
triangular stickers with a phone number and a 'Call Me' sign on to fruit,
objects and places all over the city. Needless to say they attracted the
curious, thereby creating an intersection between people on the street and art.
Much of the focus of the work of other students was also people-oriented
and not 'insular' as some art can be.
For example, the Industrial Design
students developed products and designed solutions supported by 3D models. One
of the students designed a 'First Aid Work Station for Automobiles' while
another student Maria Zafar was inspired by American cartoonist Rube Goldberg
who drew complicated machines that performed simple tasks in indirect ways.
Khaliq Ahmed from the Communication Department presented poster art
under the title of "Ni Tu Bhool Na Jawee" along with a video. He focused on the
history of the Pakistani film industry since Partition with a video of
interviews of popular figures that ended with the music of "Khuda Kay Liye" that
symbolizes the revival of our cinema. "Tang Nahin Karain" advocated against the
use of irritating labels such as "Urdu Medium" and "Burger" among others. Sara
Khan's paintings and miniature sculptures carried a humorous element as she drew
her inspiration from a saying in Urdu that "Pathans are Akhrots."
Shafaq
Zehra from the Textile Department was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's paintings
and used their touch to design rugs, mats and table cloths. The department's
overall display of apparel, bed sheets and curtains stood out because of the
frequent use of rich and bright colours. Madeeha Suboor was driven by problems
in her own life; she displayed images and miniature paintings of different parts
of her house which were reminiscent of a particular feeling or occurrence.
Durriya Kazi, the head of Visual Studies, appreciated their courage as
they were able to excel at a place far from home and whose environment was
considered difficult by many. "Even though their work is personal, these
students are not divorced from social issues around them," she said. Daily Times
