Pandemonium in KU examinations
Karachi, Dec 17, 2007: Nearly 900 students of BCom and BSc taking their papers on
Saturday had the shock of their lives when they found that there were not enough
chairs at the University of Karachi (KU) Gymnasium, Sheikh Zayed Islamic
Research Centre and Zoology Department. They had to wait while the officials of
the university worked frantically to bring the chairs.
The students first
panicked and then became angry, and a law and order situation was about to be
created when the vice chancellor, Prof Pirzada Qasim, took charge of the
situation and the problem was solved before it could grow out of proportions.
Surprisingly Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university and
responsible for such arrangements was nowhere to be found. Some officials of the
university said that he had left the university at midday.
We
talked to Prof Qasim in his office to ask why such a blunder happened at all. He
admitted that it was the fault and oversight and mismanagement of the
examinations department that had created such unprecedented and ugly situation.
He said that the just concluded BA examinations for the private
candidates had about 10,000 students but the number of BCom students was 18,000
thousand and that of BSc was 5,000. So more seats had to be procured but due to
the negligence, lack of coordination and general apathy of the officials, the
students had to suffer.
"I was informed of the situation at about 1:30pm
only half-an-hour before the commencement of the examinations. I asked the staff
concerned to move quickly and they did. I allowed the examinees to write their
papers to full three hours. Fearing the delay will require lighting arrangements
owing to the early sunset, I ensured that lights would be on when darkness sets
in," he said.
We also talked to the affected students to know
their viewpoints. One student, requesting anonymity, expressed his resentment on
the university officials who had created this mess and scared the students. "It
is preposterous. It is the best university in the country. How could it happen?
The delay erased our preparedness and tempo was on decline", he said in anger.
Others were unanimous in condemning the examination department for such
callousness.
Prof Qasim, while accepting the mistake of the examination
department urged the authorities, the colleges, ministry of education and all
the stakeholders to sit together and device ways and means to make colleges the
examination centres. "Everyday the number of students is increasing while the
infrastructure is the same in the university. It is difficult to cope with such
a large number of students. There should be a gradual sharing of this matter by
the colleges", he said. The News
