LUMS holds 19th convocation
LAHORE, Dec 12, 2007: Convocations are a time of transition, moving from the world of academia
into the real world of business, where everyone has to graduate every day until
he achieves his goal, said House of Charity executive director Hashmant Effendi.
She was addressing the 19th convocation of Lahore University of
Management Sciences (LUMS) on Tuesday.
She said one could not succeed
until he/she had a dream. Ms Effendi said she had a dream at a very young age
that led her set up the House of Charity. She said it was her passion to help
children, who were suffering from inborn deformities and were burnt. She said,
"The House of Charity is providing free surgical and medical care to the
impoverished children to help them live normal lives."
Since its
inception, she said, the House of Charity had helped over 150,000 children
worldwide.
LUMS vice chancellor Prof Dr Syed Zahoorul Hassan,
pro-chancellor Syed Babar Ali, teachers and students were present on the
ceremony.
Prof Dr Syed Zahoor said, "The day has a special importance in
the lives of our graduates, as it marks your achievements and it is a symbol of
your dreams and aspirations."
He said 584 students were awarded degrees
in various disciplines. He said, "Our target is to set up four schools in the
next 10 years." In the schools, he said, 4,000 students would be admitted.
LUMS rector Abdul Razzak Dawood said LUMS had entered into its 3rd
decade. He said LUMS was among those institutions that were benefiting all
segments of the society. He said the LUMS graduates would become role models for
the people. He said LUMS haD set a goal on becoming a recognised research
