Lahore International Book Fair from January 2
LAHORE, Dec 26, 2007: The five-day Lahore
International Book Fair (LIBF) will start at the main Fortress Stadium on
January 2, 2008. This will be the 23rd LIBF in the city. The fair ends on
January 6.
About 175 publishers from around the world will set up stalls
at the fair. Thousands of people from far and wide including intellectuals,
writers and students are expected to visit. The Punjab Governor Lt Gen (r)
Khalid Maqbool will be the chief guest at the fair's opening on January
2.
LIBF Trust Secretary General Najam Sethi said that prominent
publishing houses from the United Kingdom, United States, India, Bangladesh and
other South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries would
participate in the fair. He said more people than last year were expected
because the trend of reading books had increased in the city.
LIBF Trust
administrator Saleem Malik said 20 Indian publishers including the big ones like
Prentice Hall and Tata Mcgraw Hill would participate. He said many Indian guests
would also attend the fair and literary discussions on the
sidelines.
LIBF Trust chairman Zubair Saeed said international publishers
would give attractive discounts on their books while local publishers had
already cut prices significantly, some by as much as 40 to 50 percent. He said
the LIBF Book Fair was expanding every year and that the people's response to it
had been overwhelming.
Mr Sethi said book fairs were common in developed
countries and LIBF Trust was trying to introduce the trend in Pakistan. He said
the Lahore corps commander had been very gracious by facilitating the Book Fair
at the Fortress Stadium. Daily Times
