LUMS admin for withdrawal of cases
LAHORE:THE administration of Lahore University of Management Sciences
(LUMS), expressing concern over registration of cases against four faculty
members and two students of the university, termed the charges baseless and
malicious and urged the authorities to quash them.
The university
administration also reiterated its commitment to freedom of expression and an
individual's inalienable right to express views in a peaceful
manner.
According to a press statement by the LUMS administration on
Thursday, also available on its official website, one of the professors named in
the FIR lives in the US and has not taught at LUMS for over a year. It added,
"It appears the students and professors were charged under 16 MPO (Maintenance
of Public Order) with allegations of graffiti. This is a clear indication of the
absurdity of the charges. "The LUMS community has been peacefully gathering on
the campus at the designated areas to exchange views and opinion on the current
situation in the country. All along, the students, staff and faculty at LUMS
have been fulfilling all their academic and professional responsibilities
without a single interruption to academic activities. "The charges levelled
against the faculty members and students are baseless and malicious. The
administration reiterates its commitment to freedom of expression and an
individual's inalienable right to express views in a peaceful manner and urges
the authorities to revoke the cases and related charges immediately," the
statement concluded.
FAPUASA condemns cases
LAHORE: The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff
Association (FAPUASA), condemning registration of cases against faculty members
and students of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), termed the act
a proof of government's confusion in the prevailing
circumstances.
FAPUASA President Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Salik, who is also
president of the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA), said on
Thursday that cases against four faculty members and two students of LUMS was
highly condemnable, adding that it was a proof of government's confusion. He
said the government wanted to stop academicians and students from participating
in protest rallies against the suspension of the constitution, human rights and
media curbs. He said FIRs against LUMS students and teachers and PU teachers
indicated that the government wanted to suppress their voice for rights. He
said, "We condemn the act and express our solidarity with the faculty and
students of LUMS." He said the government oppression could not hamper the
struggle of students, teachers, lawyers and civil society members for free
judiciary, media and human rights in the country. A case was also registered
against 14 senior professors of the Punjab University (PU) when they staged a
protest rally against the suspension of the constitution on New Campus. The News
