Pro-Musharraf students to form new political group
LAHORE, Dec 14, 2007: Some students from various universities across the
country will hold a meeting on Friday (today) to form a political group in
institutions to start a movement in favour of President Pervaiz Musharraf. The
students would also name their group Pakistan Students Alliance (PSA).
On
the other hand, the Students Action Committee (SAC) members have alleged that
the pro-Musharraf students were backed by bureaucrats and belonged to the elite
class. The SAC members said the students supporting Musharraf had no
importance.
Last week, around 100 students from various universities
gathered at Liberty Chowk and chanted slogans in favour of President Musharraf.
The SAC alleged that some relatives of former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz
Elahi were encouraging students regarding the pro-Musharraf
campaign.
Muhammad Hasham, a student of University College of Law (UCL)
and the main organiser of the pro-Musharraf gathering, said that
students from Hazara University, Abbotabad University, Quaid-e-Azam University,
Islamabad, and many other public and private sector universities would meet at
Liberty Chowk on Friday.
He said the meeting was to frame an agenda
regarding the pro-Musharraf campaign and name their political group. He ruled
out SAC's claims that political parties were pushing students to start a
pro-Musharraf campaign.
"We, as student of universities, realise that the
policies of President Musharraf are in better interest of Pakistan. He has
fulfilled all the promises that he had made with the nation. He has also doffed
his uniform as promised and he is now holding elections," he said.
Abdul
Qayyum, a Punjab University student, said that unlike politicians in
the past, President Musharraf upgraded Pakistan's economy. He said in Friday's
meeting, the students would also pass a resolution supporting that it should be
mention in the constitution that the president of the country should be an army
general.
Naveed Alam a PU student and SAC member, said Pakistani
citizens, lawyers, media persons and students were fighting for their rights and
those students supporting President Musharraf were trying to spoil that
movement. Daily Times
