Edu dept's Rs 72 million contract put on hold
KARACHI, Dec 15, 2007: A contract of Rs 72 million that the Sindh education
department had been awarded for supplying books, desks and other school supplies
to the city's schools has been cancelled following accusations of favoritism and
corruption.
This was said by Caretaker Sindh Minister for Education and
Literacy Shujjat Ali Baig, while addressing a press conference in his office on
Friday. He said the education department will consider revising the education
calendar after taking the federal government into confidence.
Baig said
that no jobs had been offered in his department for the last 11 years and vowed
that any future recruitment would be completely transparent and based on
merit.
Answering a query about the thousands of appointment letters being
issued by the EDOs, the education minister said that there had been no final
list issued by the department. He said the officials of the Sindh Textbook Board
will be called for a meeting to revise the academic calendar.
He said
that all EDOs education of the province have pledged that they will not
participate in any corrupt activities. "We have 7,500 reported ghost schools in
the province, 780 of which have been pointed out to the EDOs. Plans to make them
fully functional in a week are already underway," he said. He regretted that
only nine percent of the children of school-going age in Sindh actually go to
school.
He said that a notification had been issued according to which no
government employee would be allowed to run a language coaching centre. He
directed officials to strictly monitor the mounting fee structure of coaching
centers and the mushrooming of fake English language teaching centres. A meeting
of private school representatives has also been scheduled for next week, where
the fee structures of these schools will be discussed.
He said a pilot
school project will be introduced at Sharifabad School on Stadium Road while
three new engineering universities will be developed in Jacobabad, Larkana and
Badin.
Secretary education Muhammad Ali also attended the press
conference. PPI
