Punjab University students to setup hunger-strike camp
LAHORE, Dec 11, 2007: Punjab University (PU) students
on Tuesday (today) will set up a hunger-strike camp at the New Campus to protest
against holding the constitution in abeyance, violating human rights, putting
curbs on the media and arresting students.
Some PU students distributed
handouts among other students, and asked them to join the hunger-strike camp.
The camp would be set up outside the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS),
ICS student Naveed Alam said on Monday.
He said the PU
students were upset over the prevailing political situation in the country. They
were not convinced with the emergency rule, and the way human rights had been
violated, he added. He said the student at the camp would educate their fellow
students about the importance of the restoration of the constitution, human
rights and freedom of the media.
Ahsan, a student of Institute of
Administrative Sciences, said a large number of students were expected to attend
the camp. An effigy of President General (r) Pervez Musharraf would be bunt on
the occasion, he added.
The Students Action Committee (SAC), a group of
students representing 21 different universities and colleges of the city, has
set up a hunger-strike camp outside the Lahore Press Club since last Saturday
demanding release of the arrested students.
Students' protest against fellows' detention
LAHORE: Students from across the city
and members of civil society on Monday protested at the Cantonment Court against
the "imposition of marital law" and the suspension of bails of the arrested
students. Ten people including some students were detained on Thursday from
outside the deposed Judge Shahid Siddiqui's residence in GOR-I. Two FAST
students, Hassan and Amanullah were also among arrested. Their fellow students
were expecting that Hassan and Amanullah would be bailed out, but the court
ordered them to appear on Tuesday (today) in the Anti-Terrorist Court,
Dharampura.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan chairperson Asma Jahangir,
Lahore Bar Association president Syed Muhammad Shah, Advocate Khurram Latif
Khosa were also present on the occasion. The participants shouted slogans Go
Musharraf Go and Zulm Kay Yea Zabtay Hum Nahi Mantay. The Students Action
Committee continued the strike on the third day (Monday) at Lahore Press Club. A
large number of students were present at the camp. Several lawyers and human
rights activists visited the hunger strike camp and expressed their solidarity

President shows concern over cases against LUMS students, teachers
LAHORE: President Pervez Musharraf
has expressed concern over the registration of cases against the civil society
activists, teachers and students of LUMS recently. He desired that a lenient
view should be taken on such cases except those who were involved in grave
offences.
In pursuance of the President's desire, the Punjab
government has decided to withdraw cases against civil society activists,
students and teachers of LUMS. APP
